My budget is around R17,000. really don't want to spend more than 20 (including all peripherals)
Will be used for gaming and work so looking for a nice solid base all-rounder that i can upgrade and and modify over time.

Uses:

  • Majority of Adobe cc (Premiere pro, illustrator, Photoshop, etc)
  • Blender, V-Ray, Nuke and other related 3D software.
  • Latest games at 1080p

Below are the parts i'm pretty keen on.

CPU - Ryzen 5 2600x (planning to oc once i get a better cooler)
GPU - GTX 1070
Motherboard - B450 Tomahawk or Gaming Plus
RAM - 2666mhz 16GB (2x8)
Storage - 250GB (more or less) SSD, Already have a 1TB HDD for general storage.
PSU - 550W Corsair or Cooler Master
Monitor - 24" 1080p 144htz
Remaining is a Case, Keyboard, Mouse and Headset.

I haven't decided on make/model for anything so if you guys have any advice on that in terms of compatibility, quality/reputable brands and models etc
also, if you think i should spend more/less money in certain areas and what i could possibly hold back on for now and upgrade at a later stage, please share :)

I'd love to get what i can 2nd hand (especially peripherals)

Thanks in advance, looking forward to hear what you guys think.

I will try to check for specific parts later, but I suggest spending more on your monitor, maybe 1440P 120Hz. The 1070 is a beast, and it will be underutilised with 1080P monitor.

I would go for faster RAM, something like G.Skill F4-3200C16D-16GVKB Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200MHz CL16 1.35V Black Desktop Memory - Wootware . Zen likes fast ram.

Case I would do: Phanteks PH-EC350PTG_DBK Eclipse P350X Tempered Glass Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Desktop Chassis - Wootware

Plus another Fan (something like Fractal Design FD-FAN-SSR3-140-WT Silent Series R3 140mm Low-Noise Case Fan - Wootware)

Keyboard, Mouse, Headset I would get 2nd Hand on Carb. Look for something like HyperX Cloud 2 headset, or Game Zero Sennheiser. Mouse I would look for Logitech G102 or G203, or Steelseries Rival 301. Keyboard is your preference. Possibly 500GB SSD instead of 250.

Good luck, have fun!

Definitely what @joostebenjamin1 said about the monitor. The 1070 can really deliver. Currently, I'm playing The Witcher 3 on Ultra @ 1080p 60Hz and my i5 3570k CPU is bottlenecking 100% @ 100% of the time lol... Meanwhile my GPU is sitting on 15% usage. It's sad.. but funny.. but sad. This shows that with a decent mobo/cpu upgrade the 1070 will deliver awesome results on a 1440p 120Hz panel

I would suggest a more powerful PSU. Nothing less than a 650W Gold+. I had a 550W (older PSU) and the GPU would just not power on. The 650W did the trick.
Also be aware of the 1070 model you select. Some have 2 fans (normal size GPU) but the 3 fan models are quite long. My 1070 ROG STRIX is about a ruler's length.

Personal preference here, but I would take a horrible chassis any day for better internal components. You want performance. You can always rebuild into a nicer chassis and some Carbies sell them fora good price.

If you do decide what you would want I have a couple of things im selling, for example 1200w and 1300w PSU`s that are a year old and still under warranty for dirt cheap

Intel slightly outpaces Ryzen with regards to Adobe products.
The i5-8600K is about the same price as the Ryzen 5 2600x.

thanks for the input guys, appreciate it

just one thing..

For ram, either
or

When looking at the motherboards qvl (b450 tomahawk) neither of these models are specifically mentioned, should i just stick to whats on the qvl or will one of the above be fine? matched with the 2600x

Either should work but google the exact model code on the Wootware website to see what RAM chips it’s running and then check if those are Ryzen compatible.

TridentZ were some of the first RAM sticks that were very stable with Ryzen and now that AMD has updated the motherboards BIOS a bit better, most good brands, including Corsair, work fine.

FYI, if you’re getting the Tomahawk, it’s a great buy and so is the Mortar.
