Opinion A Long Overdue Rig/Setup Upgrade

Almost Wednesday...

I recently did an extensive upgrade so I thought I'd share my rig/setup with you guys.

I went from a H510m mobo and i5 10400f cpu to a B760 gen5 mobo and i5 12400 cpu with 16gb 5600 ddr5 ram. Paired this setup with a Radeon RX6700XT 12gb Qick.

Finally replaced my 15 year old Cooler Master Stormtrooper with a Antec NX416L mid tower case which has 2 160mm fans in front and a 120mm rear exhaust fan. The airflow on this case is sick! The tempered glass side panel swings open on a hinge mechanism which I really like.

The last thing I need to do is install my new AIO and 850W gold PSU when it arrives Friday. Will expand my storage with the 2nd NVME slot in future.

PS: If you look in the top right corner of the pic you'll see wooden boxes I made on the wall with all my old physical PC games lined up. Thought it would be a nice touch to preserve a bit of nostalgia with my setup.

My RIG is nothing to look at, its "all go and no show" - aiming for the proper sleeper build, looking for an older looking case to make it look like its from the late 90's/early 2000's

Not sure if you're aware, but you know you can switch the rgb on that case to be controlled by the motherboard/software? Holding the led/reset button on the io for around 3 seconds switches the rgb to be controlled by the motherboard header where the rgb/fan controller is plugged in.

Only problem I've had so far is that I can't seem to be able to control my system fans when they are connected to the rgb/fan controller, and I would prefer not to plug each of them into their own seperate fan ports on the mobo for the sake of cable management...

Your setup is lekker. I have to digress, Julio at Rebel Gaming suggested this case to me last year. And I am very happy with it! I also really like the hinged side window!

I just spotted it now in your picture, great mounting for your speakers too!

Just there for show at the moment. If I can find a way of seating a dvd/cd drive without breaking up the aesthetics of the rig I might do a run -through of all the old classics.

BTW, NFSMW (2005) is still my fav racing game to date! Played that game forever!

My rig has been a sleep build these last couple of years with the old CM case. A proper sleeper wil be building a high-end system into an old p4 case with stuffy drive, cd drive and all the old retro goodness.

When its really a high end AMD setup inside... case is an old all black case with some silver trim and black DVD writer and black stiffy drive.

performance difference between the 10400 and 12400 with the 6700xt in gaming ?

Jeez, you really had to go to far lengths to get your lights to work! Hats off to you for finding a workaround and managing to get them to work, albeit in a non-conventional way!

I was also looking at Rebel Gaming when searching for a PC case. I was actually looking at Progenix, Wootware and Rebel Gaming, with Progenix being my preferred option, but then I came across this Antec case being advertised on BobShop (New sealed condition) for R899, shipping included. Wootware asks close to R1300 for the same case and then they charge an extra R335 shipping which is absolutely ridiculous.

Thanks man. I built the whole floating ''media console/PC desk'' from recycled pallets which I broke down into planks, cut, glued, stained and sealed and then fixed the unit to the wall. There's no traditional desk or table legs so my legs are completely free underneath with no hindrance, which I prefer, especially with a compact desk like mine.

performance difference between the 10400 and 12400 with the 6700xt in gaming ?

I still need to run some gaming benchmarks, but so far I'm getting much smoother frames in cs2 (which utilizes the cpu a lot) as well as less frame drops and 1% lows. But I'm sure the 5600 MHz ddr5 ram also plays significant role.

I also got the feeling lately that the 10400f was holding my rx6700 back a little bit.

I would have went Super-Flower 850w (Class A -10 year warranty for a few hundred rands extra and best capacitors in the world), and a Montech Hyperflow AIO.

I would have preferred the SF PSU, but I got my PSU for R1100 which is a cool R900 less than the SF, so I had to think about my budget. I also got the AIO at a steal which helped keep things within budget.

If there was absolutely no budget I would have gone with a wild setup, but within the constraints I set for myself I feel like lucked out on most of my components to make the upgrade possible.
