Hello guys.
Long story short. Wife had a 2012 Citroen C4. She crashed it two weeks ago. She is okay, no damage to her what so ever. Car is a write off. Need new car.

Looked at "we buy cars" and was thoroughly disappointed. They literally buy and sell cars as is, regardless if its broken to hell or not. They buy a car with a engine that is pissing oil, they sell it at RXX price with the pissing oil.
Either way, there was a lexus is 250, Merc C300 and a BMW 320i that we were interested in. All roughly about 2010/2011 models with around 100 000kms on them. Turned out the lexus didn't have water in the radiator because there is a leak somewhere which they sell to you as is. C300 had really bad hail damage, and a missing glove compartment... I'm still confused as to HOW but what ever. The BMW was in perfect condition and it was sitting there with a "sold" paper attached to it, a little bit irritating. I also learnt that the Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 is made for midgets who's physical width has to be that of a small pole to fit into those damn seats and I'm not particularly a big guy and the boot is big enough to hold your lunch time spoon, not the lunch box, just the spoon.

Anyway,I looked around online and went to a few dealerships and sorta came up with a few options that my wife and I sorta agree on.

2013 BMW 320i Coupe AT - 121 500 km - Full service history
2012 BMW 328i AT - 126 831 KM - Full service history
2015 Citroen DS4 1.6 thp AT - 54 000 KM
2016 Toyota Corolla 1.8 CVT - 70 000 KM
2015 Citroen DS5 1.6 thp AT - 74 000 KM
2013 BMW 320i "M sport" AT - 102 000 KM

These are all Automatics because wifey wants a automatic which severely limits the options as well as she doesn't want to run out of puff when going up a incline because her previous car was a 1.6 diesel and that didn't care about hills.

Gimme all your brutal opinions please.

Just be careful with those BMW's, if the have the old N20 engine they are quiet troublesome engines.
The timing chain/timing chain guides are a common problem but to name a few.

My suggestion is rather go for the 320d in that same year model as they are very solid cars.
As for the rest of you selection, i cant comment as i have no experience with them

If you want some peace of mind remember to consider a mechanical breakdown warranty ( Preferably with AA)...If you decide to finance they can just work that into your monthly premium. Service history can have an impact if you claim so keep that in mind as well

*Would also much rather prefer the 320D

I thought I should be weary of the diesels(father had some turbo issue).
I did a bit of research on the engines for the BMWs. The engine models are N46B20 and N43B20 not sure if they fall into the same N20 that you mentioned, maybe you'd perhaps know?

The most expensive car you will ever buy is a cheap german car.

Rather go for a decent/higher model Ford/VW/Toyota and save money on services and parts and what not.
I do like the idea for that toyota. But it's also a bit of a high target for being stolen, if im not mistaken.

Turbo issues can happen on all sorts of cars, be it petrol or diesel.
It comes down to factors of how the car has been serviced/maintained and also how it's been looked after by the previous owner.

For example changing oil at the regular intervals or 20k or 25k is not good for the turbo and will cause damage to the turbo. Oil service should be done every 7500/10000km.

Also another thing is the way we drive the car and just turn them off. A turbo car sold be given some time to cool off before switching off after driving, there length of time will vary on how it's been driven before reaching the final destination

+1 for 320d rather. Those engines are really solid. The first f30 320i had issues.
When I did my research way back the turbo replacement on a 320d was actually not that bad. Cheaper than any VW turbo replacement. Mine is sitting on 110k and no issues what so ever. Use good oil and change it at least every 10k km or once a year.

Service are also not crazy expensive. I pay less for my 320d service than what I paid for my wife’s 1.6 polo.

Can confirm, the bmw diesels are rock solid. Had a 320d with a ton of mods and software. Upset a lot of bigger cars and handled the punishment really really well. The most expensive maintenance thing on that car was tires.

I am also extremely particular on maintenance. So the diesel had oil changes every 7.5k km. Had absolutely no issues except wearable items.

2010 e90.

Looks like the diesels from the BMW might be a good idea. I'll see if I can find any.
My wife is going to look at a Citroen DS4 on Monday. It's one of the 1.6THPs.

What are these (E90),(F20)... and so forth. There are soo many and with the deisels I have seen so far they all have different "codes" A lot of the BMWs say F30 in bracket, one of them says E90. What do these mean? sorry for my ignorance xD

These are the models. E90 ended late 2011. Then the F30 was released. The 320d engines between the later E90 and F30 are basically identical. The F30 auto gearbox are much better than the E90 auto though but the E90 is not bad.

Not sure what your budget is but if you can get a reasonable mileage F30 320D it would definitely be the pick of the bunch. Much better interiors than the E90 and a great engine.

I'm a Peugeot/Citroen Tech and the only car i would take is the Corolla from that list. If you like Citroen than go for a 2.0 diesel auto model any one will do, the diesels are great, 6 speed auto box also reliable. 1.6 THP petrols made by BMW are terrible. The BMW i also will go from the 320D E90.

fuck me.....someone went through all the trouble to create a special website when they got screwed over by webuycars....eye opener for me...

My opinion but a car at a auction. Many people are scared to buy at auctions because of the risk, but the thing is almost ALL car dealers purchase cars at these auctions and then sell them on with a story of its a good customer of their's that traded it in.. Blah blah blah.

Save the R40-50k that the dealer would have loaded the car's price with as a backup for if something goes wrong.

The early model F30 320i has a harmonic issue on conrod nr2.
It is nearly impossible to rebuild these engines.

I would say go for E90 320D M47. Get a clean one with FSH.
Dont look for the cheapest one, look for the most expensive low mileage one.

And why is Toyota RAV4 not on your list?

We've sorta found a Ford fusion 2.0 ecoboost. So we are looking at that.

There are a lot of BMWs out there and 95% of them look as if they come from backyard cash only sort of place.

Most Toyotas were excluded because of the risk on them, My wife's family love their toyota rav4s and fortuners and I think only two of the 11 Toyotas they have had have not been stolen. They all making the switch to Nissan 4x4s now.

Careful of that ford gearbox
why?

I assume you are talking about the powershift gearboxes.
As far as I'm aware after lots of researching, the fusion doesn't have the powershift gearbox.

Edit: Nevermind, I stand corrected.... shit
