As per the title - is a 4mbps connection good enough to do both gaming on 1 device and watching DSTVnow/youtube on another?

Rain LTE is shit.
Telkom DSL is shit
and of course, fibre installation in our complex has been significantly delayed..........

Pricing of premium uncapped fixed wireless (at iClix) is as follows:
2mb/2mb - R350pm
3mb/3mb - R450pm
4/4 - 550 (my prefered choice)
5/5 - 700
6/6 - 750 (if 4mbps wont cut i'll go for this if it will suffice?)
7/7 - 850
8/8 - 950
.
.
15/15 - 1800 (way out of my budget)

I can get infrastructure 2nd hand (dish and cables ect) for +-R1000, I'm happy with that.

I would say.... No - it's not.
Latency on the wireless options can be all over the place at times - for gaming.
Should be fine for streaming at lower quality though - expect buffering at times.

Not unless you're streaming in 4k
for 480p 4Mb should be just fine I reckon. Buffering from latency though can be expected. Wait the buffering out I guess

Ag moer.... I get the download speed might not be enough. But I have a number of friends on this wireless internet network. Latency is awesome and surprisingly stable. Ping ranging from 10ms - 15ms. My current DSL setup is more expensive and hond kak. shit ping, packet loss and connection issues for days.

Nope
4MBPS isn't even enough for gaming on one device anymore nevermind the other net requirements which would also only barely be met.

Do you rate the 6mbps will be worth it for the extra R200 pm?
Absolutely not
It's just a marketing ploy - the nature of the technology doesn't really scale that well. Those speeds aren't really constant and the latency is usually all over the place (depending on other factors outside of your control of course)

You mention your RAIN connection is garbage - have you tried an external antenna perhaps? Different router more geared for the RAIN frequency?

If this wireless option doesn't lock you into a contract - is trying it out for a month not possible?

The Rain connection was amazing the 1st 6 months, but the connection degraded over time to a point where i got >50ms ping and <4mbps d/l.
I sold the modem so i doesnt matter now, but i had excellent signal strength. We live very close to a tower.

Fortunately contracts are month to month. I guess it comes down to whether the Wireless internet @ 6mbps uncapped - R750pm will be better than the DSL @ 6.5mbps 150gb cap - R920 pm.

Damn - those prices are just absurd

Makes me feel somewhat better shelling out R820 a month for a 100Mb connection

Perhaps give the 4Mb wireless a go (as a starting point) for a month and see what experience it offers and what you can realistically achieve.
Going on the reviews of that 'provider' though, I personally wouldn't go near them

alone on my lte-a i get about 30-45 ping with someone else on my ping spikes to 98-140ms
and thats on 75mbps down and 45mbps up.

that's why i have dsl and a lte so she can stream and facebook.
and i can play some dota and csgo.

The same with me, give the bitch a seperate connection for her phone and movie streams.

If wireless is your only option I would recommend Rain's R250 unlimited off-peak deal.

You pay R250 a month and all data between 11PM - 6PM the following day is uncapped. That R250 gets you 5GB to use in peak time (6PM - 11PM). After that it's R50 per GB.

I'm on Rain because there is no fibre in the area and it's been working great for me. I get 30 - 45MS ping in local Black Ops 4 lobbies and my ping on Apex Legends to the London and Belgium servers are between 175MS - 190MS which is actually very decent for international servers.

The speed is great as well. Getting 30MB up and 30MB down.

Short answer: no.
Long answer: no way hose

My dad had a 8mb line and that used to buffer a lot with dstv if you connect 1 device as well (like a phone).

If you want to do all those things at the same time you will need like 20mbps fiber or something, else you can may be get away with 10mb but then your experience wont be great

I had a Rain LTE before going back to DSL. The Rain connection was amazing the 1st 6 months, but the connection degraded over time to a point where i got >50ms ping and <4mbps d/l.

Well shit, Fibre will likely be installed around November '19 and i don't want to pay R1800 for 15mbps wireless internet. Sigh, SA internet is a painfull experience.

"SA is a painfull experience**"

Might be cause it's fibre but I have a 20/10 connection and I stream at 576p on 1 device, another on 720p (dstv now) and 720p/1080p on another one, no buffering and that's all at the same time.

Recommended stable speed:720 is just around 2.5mbps,1080 4mbps

For OP,Fluctuations will affect the latency and buffering worse the lower the line speed,so theoretically if you babysit it 4 will be useable, but not recommended if you have a temper :D

Im on rain been with them a year & a bit. The only issues i've had was when they had outages other than that my speeds range from 30mbps - 70mbps and latecy was around 40 - 50 locally. The best latency i got was 30 i think but at leastbit never spiked like telkom in the evenings. I got a consitent 60 - 70mbps download speed yesterday. Running a Huawei B525 (Telkom one)

NB: ive got the fixed line rain lte and the mobile rain lte. The rain lte is better with download speeds even during nonpeak hours. No idea why capped its throttled but i havent downloaded on my capped data in a while.

Im busying downloading a small file 61mb's atm and im getting 350kb/s and its peak period at 7:33p.m. but then again this is capped data(fixed line lte) However i can still surf the interwebs to my hearts content.

Ive stopped gaming so latency doesnt matter much to me atm.

Sounds like your tower got full or something is causing interference with your router.

Sadly internet in SA is lotto. Some people are lucky where ever they go they get good net :p
