Link: MacBook Air

Bought the laptop off Carbonite to test out the new Apple silicon (M1). Thought of swapping it for my current Dell G3 (running Ubuntu on a laptop with a dedicated graphics card is a bit of a nightmare). I mostly do coding in R - which is super memory intensive. So I found that for my use case, I'm better off sticking to the Dell with 32GB of RAM. If I could get hold of a 16GB RAM version then that would be interesting to compare to the Dell.

Apologies if this is derailing but R does not run natively as of yet but through Rosetta. Hence why it will get a performance to knock.

Also eager to get my hands on an M1 for development reasons (still in my early days), so would be interesting to see how it performs natively compared to your G3. As for other benchmarks, it completely crushes all the other CPUs in the mobile department.

I think the M1 chip has great potential going forward and it can only get BETTER from this point forward.

What colour is this device?

GLWS.

No problem.

Yeah, the M1 got raving reviews, even from people like Linus. On benchmarks it owns the 9750H..

Mmm, will read up about Rosetta..

I ran an R script on both laptops (basic stuff like reading in data, wrangling, plotting, etc.). The Dell took 308 seconds while the Air took 711 seconds. So it's quite a meaty script. I've had the previous Air model and that would literally crash and run out of memory on this script - so the new unified memory does indeed work much better.

It's the space gray one.

Code mostly in Flutter and Python and I rushed to get the M1 Macbook Pro 13 inch with 8GB unified memory. I think I will also get rid of it in exchange for the 16GB. Beautiful device, nice keyboard with excellent battery though.
