Condition
  1. Broken
Polo is possibly the most expensive 'cheap' vehicle to insure in SA currently as its the #1 most likely vehicle to get hijacked or stolen. Stand to be corrected on this but i'm pretty sure its factual hence the quotes for over 1K you've already received.

Easiest way to look at getting a set of wheels that works for you is essentially 1) Is it 'cheap' to service if its out of warranty/service plan? 2) Can I do minor services or fixes on the vehicle myself to save costs? and 3) Is it reliable yet cheap enough to carry me through to where i'm no longer in debt from the previous vehicle?

I know for a fact a full VW service can easily go into the thousands if its out of warranty or service plan and that's on the basic vehicles like the golfs or polo's. Fords have the stigma of breaking down etc but the Figo's, Focus's and Fiesta's as you will know 1st had are very reliable and cheap to run vehicles. Hyundai's are also very good for longevity and build quality for what you pay for them.

Personally id say bite the bullet and spend at most R100 000 as the absolute max on a vehicle which should bring you round the R6-800 mark for insurance a month based on its age/brand/engine capacity etc ect. That way you pay off all you need to in as little time as possible to hopefully have it all payed off before you get to a point where you're racking up more debt on things you need later on in life.

Just my 2c but hope you def come right (y)

Get yourself out of debt by buying a really cheap car for now. You can get plenty of car for less than 100k.

In a couple of years, you can get yourself a nice car when you can afford it and afford proper insurance to go along with it. You've been lucky enough to have a Fiesta ST until now, but it sounds like you're not in the position where you should be trying to get a car that you can compare to that one. Please don't get a loan of R180k... a car is not going to be making you any money, your money will be far better spent elsewhere

Side note:
I wrote my car off about 2 months ago and also got carried away with all of the amazing options I could get if I took out a nice loan. I loved the idea of feeling like I got an upgrade out of the ordeal, rather than getting a similar or worse car than I had.
In the end I realised I was being silly. What's done is done. I wrote that car off.. It sucked.. but there's nothing I can do about it.
Rather than trying to make myself feel better by buying an amazing car, I eventually convinced myself to just spend R80000 on a 2011 Hyundai i20 1.6.
Insurance is R750 or so per month.
I'm glad I went with this car rather than having to fork out 4k+ per month to finance and insure a nicer car

@souljazk Yeah that's quite some debt I admit.. And I assume so, it depends on what the prime is, as my interest rate isn't fixed, it's always just 0.5% below prime.. and unfortunately I need to follow a certain type of diet.. (health issues).. but I understand what you mean.

I'll take a look at them and see what I can find.. thank you

@Shad.O I know Polo's get hijacked a lot here in Gauteng.. luckily when it comes to the plain VW's, I can do some work on them myself.. But I do understand what you mean, and honestly, being able to pay R100k for a car now would be ideal!

@craigils I agree, I'd like to be financially stable asap! Unfortunately the bank has certain requirements with the car I buy now.. like the year model, if it has service history, etc.. so it limits be a little bit

Looks like it will buff right out TBH.

There’s always that one guy [emoji1787]

@OP, glad u didn’t get seriously hurt! That looks like a bad accident. Pity about the insurance shit, they look for any excuse not to pay. Hope all is well in the end :)

Hi there man , been looking at the thread and dude your lucky to be alive.

Secondly I would agree get a lekker reliable cheap car , I would vote a Kia picanto just my two cents.

Goodluck champ.

And p.s as a 23 year old , insurance companies will nail you hard .

Glad you're okay man! Speedy recovery!

@Morne Jordaan Hey man, thanks I appreciate it! And yeah I know, but also all depends on insurance history and so on.. cause my friend is paying R1.5k for insurance on his car, which is an 86 with a supercharger from RG Motors and he's 24.. but I do understand yeah

Just am update, ended up getting my hands on a 2015 Fiesta ST, with motor warranty, for under R150k

I had a similar thing happen to me
Ask them for the recordings of call and fight them on it. Sometimes they could have misunderstood what she meant.

What was the point of the insurance? To keep the bank happy seeing as there is the loan, or did she make an honest mistake?

@Erohann No it was a mistake, nothing intentional.. I'll never drive a car without insurance.. but yahh, got insurance on my name now for the ST.
