Polo is possibly the most expensive 'cheap' vehicle to insure in SA currently as its the #1 most likely vehicle to get hijacked or stolen. Stand to be corrected on this but i'm pretty sure its factual hence the quotes for over 1K you've already received.
Easiest way to look at getting a set of wheels that works for you is essentially 1) Is it 'cheap' to service if its out of warranty/service plan? 2) Can I do minor services or fixes on the vehicle myself to save costs? and 3) Is it reliable yet cheap enough to carry me through to where i'm no longer in debt from the previous vehicle?
I know for a fact a full VW service can easily go into the thousands if its out of warranty or service plan and that's on the basic vehicles like the golfs or polo's. Fords have the stigma of breaking down etc but the Figo's, Focus's and Fiesta's as you will know 1st had are very reliable and cheap to run vehicles. Hyundai's are also very good for longevity and build quality for what you pay for them.
Personally id say bite the bullet and spend at most R100 000 as the absolute max on a vehicle which should bring you round the R6-800 mark for insurance a month based on its age/brand/engine capacity etc ect. That way you pay off all you need to in as little time as possible to hopefully have it all payed off before you get to a point where you're racking up more debt on things you need later on in life.
Just my 2c but hope you def come right
