Hey guys,

Hopefully someone here will be able to shed some light on the situation for me.

My dad is looking at purchasing 2013/14 Audi Q3 2.0 TFSI 155kw with relatively low mileage considering the model year. This is all good and well, however he would like to know what the hidden costs involved with the vehicle are. Ie: Yearly service, replacement parts and running costs related to fuel and oil etc.

If anyone has owned one of these vehicles, and is able to give us an idea as to the costs involved, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

As an Avid Audi owner, and having owned an A5 Quattro with the 155kW motor.

General maintenance isn't bad at all, Services are good, and been in Cape town, and been a 2014/13 you will be out of Plan. I suggest Ferroli motorsport, they know the Audi's backwards and service is great.

Ok now a few Fault things, if the car gets hot (overheating or lack of water in radiator), the plastic housing connecting the radiator to the engine will crack, this plastic housing however also contains the water pump, so all will need to be replaced.

You will more then likely have to replace the PCV valve around 100k, it's a R2000 piece of equipment and takes about an hour to do.

Car has a timing chain, so repalcement is only 210 000km.

S-tronic Gearbox oil will need to be replaced at 60 000km (service intervals are 60 000km) it's an expensive service as the oil is like R450l and takes around 6 litres. Don't just put any oil in, and don't miss this service as mechatronics unit will fail if oil filter clogs. (+-60k repair)

There are other options for brakes, so nothing out of the norm, you looking around R2000 for a set of pads. rears can't be changed without access to retract the handbrake mechanism.

Electrically, the cars are strong. only issue might be the battery after around 7 years of ownership. It's a coded battery to the car and is around R6000 installed at Audi, my battery in my A5 lasted 7 years.

You can send the VIN to Audi and ask them to pull the history on the car, it will tell you what was replaced and when. Gives you an idea if the car is problematic or not, and if the car was repaired from an accident you will see if they requested OEM parts (doors/bumpers etc)

But if it's looked after and maintenance is done regularly they really aren't expensive to run.

Oh, and with the Quattro system, expect to replace 4 tires at a time. and expect real world consumption in the region of 9L/100 combined. and around 7L/100 on the open road.

And just know there is a known oil "burning" Issue on that engine.

I cant remember the exact amount but you prob use a quart of Oil every 1000Km.

My Brother in Law owns a 2013 Q3 2.0 tfsi, he had the car at audi and they ran some oil consumption test, and I can't recall
the numbers but there is a certain amount of oil that is called "normal" for those engines to use per 1000km.

There is also a fix for the issue. but that s going to set you back R60 000 odd.

If you need more exact number.. hit me up and ill get it all for you

Its a direct injection engine, so its a time bomb. This engine does not have secondary injectors.
And thinking the cam chain will last to 200k is a big chance on these.
Everything mechanical on that car does not last and needs to be taken good care of.
The gearbox will not last.
Always use premium fuels only, if not it will self destruct.

Read on forums about all the problems and solutions. Get to know it well. Otherwise stay far away.

Oil consumption issue is very common, but I thought it didn't impact the 2.0T. If it does suffer from the same issues, I would not want to own it past 100k kms.
Perhaps rather look at the X3 2.0D of the same era, those N47 motors are pretty bulletproof.

Thanks so much for all the information so far, it is much appreciated :)

Do you think it is worthwhile considering one of these with 43,000 km on the odometer for R259,000? This would be purchased through an Audi dealership as a certified pre-owned vehicle.

Nice cars, the Q3's... However I would advise on the 2.0TDI over the TFSI. My mum has had a 2014 Q3 2.0TDI since new and still going very strong. Warranty has already expired and still nothing major done on the car besides it's regular service intervals.

I on the other hand have a 2.0TFSI S3, and also suffer from the oil consumption issue... not as much as 1L/1000km (which Audi claim is within acceptable limits). But to be honest for a performance vehicle it is very reliable and fairly maintenance-free (it's a 10-year old car still with it's original turbo and the engine has never been rebuilt:whistle:); albeit I could have just won the lottery with this car :)

Get a BMW rather.

I would pick a BMW over an Audi any day  We decided against getting the Audi though. Thanks for all of the input though guys, it was much appreciated!

We wound up getting a demo 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross with 9,000km on the clock for R319,900. Bloody bargain considering how much the vehicle has to offer.

Wow cool, thats a CVT gearbox right? Take good care of it. Insist on an early gearbox oil and filter change, will last this way :)

Correct, 6 speed CVT. Quite responsive as well, all things considered. Holds on to the revs a bit too long for my liking, but hey, still decent. Will be sure to mention this to my dad though, since it will be due for it's 15,000km service in Q1/2 2020.
