Ok so here is what I need to know. My work doesn't allow allot of traffic through. This is not to block users from doing some things, but simply to save bandwidth. So I have permission to use example my phone to browse youtube etc.

My laptop connects ideally to the lan cable. I want to switch on my phone hotspot and use the lte on it with my laptop. BUUUUT. how can I connect both networks in order to work while streaming music youtube over my phone.

So I need to stay on the work network to connect to the server. But I want my phone connected as well for the internet. (I am not allowed to put in a static IP address)
How can I tell my laptop to use default my phone router for internet and not the cable?

Just don't . You could be in breach of contract and out of the door before you know it. Sorry man, but don't fuck with your job.

The easiest way that I know of is to install a small Ubuntu VM and set that to use the mobile connection and have all your other stuff running normally. I am able to do that with my Mac. I run a VM for client work with a Bridged connection to the LAN and then my Mac is using my 3G connection for Emails and browsing etc.

Not to worry I am completely in line. I have confirmed with work and they said sure go for it. I am 100% allowed to this. But thanks for the concern.

I Did not think of using a VM, that might be a solution. will look into it.

Have you tried ForceBindIP?

Not familiar with forcebindIP. will check it out thanks. Hopefully this is simpler solution to a VM

+1 for this

Don't fuck with your job man.
Same response as to Soulzjazk. thanks for the concern though

Now that you're allowed - simplest way without bothering with routing for traffic and VM's etc would be to use the phone to play music over headphones, or a small BT speaker. You might be able to screencast (incl audio) to the laptop from the phone.

I used to use my phone, until it got stolen at centurion mall. using old crappy phone now until i can buy replacement end of next month. I mean. really crappy phone, freezes up on a youtube video. so yeah.

But installed the Hyper-v service. Created a VM with half resources of the I7 and 16gb ram that my laptop has, linked the network to the wireless and BOOM. sorted.

thanks everyone for the input.

Hi there champ.

Okay super dumb question but maybe this helps , We run a Vlan at my work and essentially I have to be on both networks for testing and test both gateways.

So What I would suggest do this.

Switch on hotspot , connect via Wifi.
Plug in lan cable connect via LAN

See if your interworks for the youtube ( I highly doubt it wil)

Open up CMD , type IPCONFIG check your default gateway for your phone (hotspot network)

Lastly just check they dont send you down a proxy n eg internet explore tools connection edit lan settings make sure that is automatically detect.

(OPTIONAL) ----- |

Type that IP and default gateway into your alternative IP , so there where you change your IPv4 settings there is a alternative option to type it in manually. (take note this you do on your Ethernet connection)

So main IPv4 IP is on reservation or address lease , what ever your company uses to give IP's

Second one configure static to look at phone hotspot.

Then it should work . keep me posted

split routing based on your work ip range using metrics to define priority.

make a bat file to setup your routing which you run periodically and another to reset to default/clear routing.

eg

route add -p 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 metric 1 (phone gateway)
route add -p 1.1.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 1.1.1.1 metric 1 if 16 (staff interface & gateway)

When your work gets a bill for R5000+, you’ll pay and likely get fired at the same time.

Don’t fuck around with company assets. Be cool.

You shouldn't be watching YouTube videos at work anyway. Get Spotify or Google Play Music and stream music from your phone if that's your goal.
