Hi guys,

I have a MSI GS 60 laptop. Its got 16GB ram, 2x 256GB m2 SSD in Raid 0, 1TB HDD, I7 4270HQ, GTX 970m 3GB etc. I benchmarked it with Heaven and the result was 74.1 FPS. I am comparing this to another laptop (Asus 16GB ram, 250gb m2 ssd, 1tb, i5 7300, GTX 1050 4GB which scored 55.9 FPS.)

I then played Wildlands and the Asus is very smooth. No issues at all on med/high detail. The MSI has a good FPS of around 45-55 on Med and 40-45 on high (which is higher than the Asus) and the quality of detail is just nicer on the MSI screen. Problem is on the MSI I'm getting a lot of tearing issues. I started playing with the settings and this is the result:

Full Screen - VSync disabled - FPS around 50 - A lot of screen tearing
Full Screen - VSync Enabled - FPS around 50 - Feels a bit slow’ish
Bordered - VSync can’t enable - FPS also around 50 - Can’t play. Tearing is insane
Window Mode - Vsync can’t enable - Game plays perfect. Only issue is there’s a window around the game.

So for some reason Window mode works 100%. Problem is I don't want to play like that. I prefer to play in Bordered mode but that's not possible AT ALL. Even Full screen with VSync enabled is "playable" but its still a bit jerking moving left/right (I think this might be because VSync is enabled but if I disable it it causes tearing.) Surely this is a setting somewhere that I can change?

I tried checking GSync but the display is shown as connected to the Intel chipset so the option for GSync isn't visible. What else can I try?

i am no Nvidia owner but it seems that vsync in that game is double buffered. Either force triple buffer or disable vsync and use adaptive vsync from you gpanel.

some links:
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands | PCGamingWiki
Adaptive VSync | GeForce

hope that helps

In border mode (which i'll like to play in) VSync option does get disabled in the game. I just checked in my Nvidia panel that Tripple buffering is set as Off. Should I try and enable it? VSync is set to Use Application Settings..

In Border mode vsync is disabled because windows handles the sync in windowed mode so you wont be able to do much about it, and as far as i know you should not have tearing in windowed mode at all. Are you on win7 or something? make sure your aero theme is enabled. all those options that i mentioned only apply in full screen.

to recap:

Full screen: you have control over vsync.
Windowed: windows handles the vsync and its always enabled. if you still see tearing in this mode then something is off with you windows settings.

I am on windows 10 Pro. As in my first post Full screen runs and with/without VSync its just not as smooth as it should be. In Windowed mode its perfect. I just want Bordered mode to run like it does in Windowed mode but I can't get it to work the same.

sorry i dont own the title but as far as i know we only have 3 display modes:
full screen, windowed, borderless

i am not sure which one you are reffering to when saying bordered since there seems to be a distinction between windowed and bordered here according to your explanations. Windowed and borderless are pretty much the same except one does not have the windows frame around the image.

haha.. Sorry I meant borderless. So basically Windowed mode without the border (as you said). But for some reason if I put the mode into borderless its unplayable. I have no idea why this is the case. As far as I understand Windowed and borderless uses the same "settings' as borderless is shortened for borderless window. But for some reason it just doesn't want to work as it should. Was hoping this is something I should change but no luck so far

@blazer any idea what refresh rate that laptop is running at? I recently plugged my pc to a 4k tv and for some reason my pc decided to run the screen at 30hz, I was able to change it to 60hz. So maybe there is an issue around your refresh rate setting?

I see, in that case maybe try capping your fps to 60, that should eliminate most of the tearing if not all of it. i see that there is an in game settings for fps limit.

Ok so the screen is 60hz. Tried the limiter but didn't make any difference. No idea why Windowed mode works fine but borderless doesn't work even 50% the same..

I think I may have a solution for you if windowed mode is working flawlessly. I use this program to get HD resolution on Diablo 2. It's called Borderless Gaming:

Borderless Gaming

You'll need to add the -w argument to the game shortcut in Properties to open it in WIndowed mode or set it in the game. You'll then need to add the game to the right hand list of the app so that the game launches without a windowed border in borderless mode.

Once you have done that you have to launch the Borderless Gaming app first, then the game. Voila. It should would great. Let me know how it goes.

Cheers :)
