This guide will help any noob start mining but with the assumption that you have a little bit of IT knowledge like building a rig. Checking temps, testing stability, basic trouble shooting etc. This guide is written to the best of my knowledge. Mining is volatile, never spend more than what you can afford to loose. Mine at your own risk.

SECTION 1​

What this guide is NOT going to tell you an why


  • Which coin is most profitable - This varies everyday. It is impossible to predict. You need to check on a daily basis but read below.
  • How to mine with Nvidia GPU - Currently Nvidia have no GPU's fit for mining, hash/power is NOT profitable on any Nvidia card. (This might change a little bit on Maxwell Nvidia Is About To Steal The Cryptocurrency Mining Crown From AMD - Forbes
  • Is mining profitable or worth it - It all depends on you and therefore no one is going to beg you to mine, or try it.
Mining Dictionary

Crypto Refers to all virtual currency like BTC LTC FTC DOGE etc.
Coin - Virtually currency awarded for mining like BTC,LTC,FTC, DOGE and so forth.
Alt-Coins Alternative coins, they jump up overnight with high profitability but mine these with caution. Explained below.
Sha-256 - Algorithm used for Bitcoin mining and other sha-256 mining, Not profitable on GPU mining anymore due to ASICS (NOT covered in this guide )
Scrypt - Algorithm used for Litecoin, Feathercoin, Dogecoin and other scrypt based mining.
Miner - Program or application used to make your GPU's do the workload (cgminer, sgminer, guiminer, multiminer etc)
Pool - This is a website where you will register an account. Be warned, There are good pools, bad pools and scam pools out there. Please find a list of trusted pools below.
Worker This is a unique username and password created on the pool (NOT your login username and password) The worker will report to the pool what your miner is doing.
Hash / Hash Rate Most important term in mining. Your hash/hash rate is your speed that your rig/miner is working/mining at.
Note that Scrypt mining uses Khash (Kilo Hash) and Mhash (Mega Hash) whereas Bitcoin uses Ghash (Giga Hash)
1000 Khash = 1Mhash
Wallet Virtual wallet to store all your coins on your PC.
Exchange Website to trade sell and buy coins.

Operating System

  • Windows 7 - Supports up to 5 cards - AMD Drivers might be unstable, will have to fine tune and stress test. Can not run of USB drive.
  • Windows 8 - supports up to 6 cards - AMD Drivers might be unstable, will have to fine tune and stress test. Recommended for non-dedicated miners. Can run of USB drive min. 16GB+
  • Linux (Ubuntu, Mint etc) - Supports up to 7+ cards - AMD Drivers stable. Recommended for 1 or two dedicated miners. Can run of USB Drive min 8GB+
  • BAMT - Supports 7+ cards - AMD Drivers stable. Recommended for any type of dedicated farm. Can run of USB drive min 2GB+

NOTE: Linux can be run from USB, so you can restart your windows PC and run linux/bamt and restart again to boot windows.

Hardware

Most important part of mining is choosing the correct hardware.

GPU's

This is a rough estimate of the hashrate of different cards, with the power use in brackets:

6950 --> 420-450 K/Hash (180watt)
6970 --> 450-470 K/Hash (?)
5870 --> 420 K/Hash (150watt)
5970 --> 700 K/Hash (250watt)
5970 --> 700 K/Hash (250watt)
7850 --> 350 K/Hash (130watt)
7950 --> 600 K/Hash (210watt)
7970 --> 720-750 K/Hash (250watt)
270/270x --> 470 K/Hash (150watt)
280x --> 750 K/Hash (250watt)
290 HYNIX VRAM --> 900 K/Hash (300watt)
290 ELPIDA VRAM 850-880 K/Hash (300watt)
290x --> 950 K/Hash (300watt)

**7990 non MALTA --> 1250 K/Hash (450watt)

** The 7990 MALTA edition is NOT recommended for mining, it uses 500Watt Power when mining this WILL blow your PSU melt cables etc. I have seen proof of this myself. Don's say I did not war

*** Do not overload your PSU's, Do not overload your wall plugs and DB board circuit breakers. 15 amps breaker can handle max 4500 watt+- only use 80% so stay close to 3500 watt per plug/breaker. Take in consideration everything else running in your house on the same breaker. Ask an electrician for advice if you have any concerns.

CPU's

Buy the cheapest for your motherboard, it has NO effect on mining hash rate.

** Sandy Bridge and under supports max 6 cards
** Ivy bridge and up supports up to 7+ cards

MOTHERBOARDS

Depends entirely on how many cards you want to run.

**If you run linux make sure your onboard LAN is driver supported.

RAM

AMD cards 1x to 7x R9 280x = 4GB for Linux 8GB for windows per rig.
AMD 1x to 7x R9 290+ = 8GB Ram per rig.

PSU

Depends on your GPU's, do not overload your PSU. Only buy Gold rated or Platinum rated (when affordable)
**Bronze/Silver and under are not efficient enough and will cost you more electricity.

Power cost

** Rough estimate to calculate power costs, because virtual coins fluctuate in value every day. It is nearly impossible to determine what your profits will be every 30days.

Every city is slightly different, but in Durban the flatrate for household power is R1,24 per kWh, thus:
24h per day, 30 days a month = R893 per kw per month.

Coins and Pools

Choose your coin :) This will determine your pool. Remember that alt coins seem more profitable but keep in mind where you are going to sell these coins. If no exchange accepts them you will not be able to trade/sell your coins into Rands!

PROFITABILITY

** Here you can enter your expected hash rate to see which coin will be more profitable. It is not recommended to coin jump. But its your choice.

MINING SETUP :D

The fun part!

Windows 7 + 8

GPU settings can be found here https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison Now you have to add settings depending on your gpu. There are plenty combinations so you will have to play around to figure this out.

Its all depended on your model and I suggest you spend some time fine tuning these settings.

Download one of the following

cgminer 3.7.2 - Scrypt mining is not supported on any version higher than this.

Guiminers are not supported in this guide, they are to simple to explain further. I recommend using one of the above rather.

** Nice app to autostart and monitor cgminer/sgminer. optional you do not really need it.

Steps

SECTION 2​

======================================================================================

1. Register an account with your chosen pool. (example give-me-coins - username carbonite and password 12345)
2. In your pool settings/dashboard create your workers - 1 worker per rig ( example carbonite.1 and password abcd)
3. Install latest AMD drivers for your GPU.
4. Restart PC and check device manager if all gpu's are dedected.
5 Open cmd (comand prompt) and enter the following "setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT = 100" and "setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1"
6. Unzip cgminer and create a new text document inside your cgminer directory.
7. Most pools have a config generator to give you basic information or you can copy and paste below with your own details.

It will look like this:

cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u carbonite.1 -p abcd

Add in settings for your GPU and it will look like this.

Basics for R9 270/x
cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u carbonite.1 -p abcd - I 19 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 15232 --gpu-fan 80

Basics for R9 280x
cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u carbonite.1 -p abcd - I 13 -g 2 --thread-concurrency 8182 --gpu-fan 80

Basics for R9 290
cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u carbonite.1 -p abcd -I 20 -g 1 -w 512 --thread-concurrency 24550 -gpu fan 85

You can use --gpu-engine and --gpu-memclock to OC your cards.

example R9 270: cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u carbonite.1 -p abcd - I 19 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 15232 --gpu-fan 80 --gpu-engine 1050 --gpu-memclock 1450

You can also use commas to set different settings for different GPU's example I 18,13,16 --thread-concurrency 8192, 15232, 1200 --gpu-fan 70, 85, 50 etc.

8. SAVE the text file in your cgminer directory as any name you want but addind .bat to the filename example miner.bat

9. To run the miner double click your bat file, you can create a shortcut to desktop.

Read the READ-ME file in your cgminer directory for more information on other settings like powertune and lookup-gap etc.

Alternatively you can also use MSI afterburner for OC, Fan speeds and even undervolting. Again you will have to spend some time finding the sweet spot.

If all is well your cgminer will start up an look something like this



Things to look out for:

A = accepted shares - you WANT this!
R = rejected share - you DO NOT want this to be higher than max 5% of your total Accepted shares! scale down on OC and Intensity (I)
HW = Hardware errors - you DO NOT want this check your settings! usually thread concurrency that is wrong!
WU = Work Unit - you WANT this to be +- 90% of your hashrate per gpu after miner has run for 20min.

After 5 min see of your pool reports your hashrate. It should be close to what your miner reports but wont be 100% correct as the pool calculates your hashrate based on your accepted shares. it WILL fluctuate way over your hash and under your hash but shoul be atleast in the 80% mark.

If your pool does not report your hash within 10 min of mining something is wrong. check your accepted shares and your worker details.

NOTE: Your worker username and password is DIFFERENT to your pool login.

SECTION 3​

**Linux

***You can install linux on a Flash drive. You might be asked for your password that you setup during installation. Also select automatic login during installation.

1. Install your latest version of 64bit Linux Distro. I recommend Xubuntu, Ubuntu or Mint. If possible get updates while installing.
2. Open up firefox/browser and register on your pool, create your workers.
3. Download latest linux driver here - http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Latest-LINUX-Beta-Driver.aspx
4. Download cgminer here - http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/3.7/cgminer-3.7.2.tar.lrz
5. copy all the download files to your desktop.
6. Open Terminal (you can search for it in the left corner search function) its like cmd for windows.
7. type on "cd Desktop"
8. Your directory should now be Desktop (type "ls" to list files on your desktop) if you see the amd driver your directory is fine.
9. Right click your AMD driver and rename it to "driver" do not take away the .run extension. Do not close your terminal.
10. Enter the following "sudo sh ./driver.run" give a second to run, you should see AMD pop up.
11. Follow on screen instructions and restart once done.
12. Open terminal and type in "sudo aticonfig --initial -f" If you have more than one card type in "sudo aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all"
13. Now you can restart or type "sudo reboot" to restart.
14. Right click cgminer download and select extract here. Open terminal and change directory to Desktop again. (cd Desktop)
15. Type "cgmine" and hit tab button, this should complete your entry to cgminer full directory name, hit enter. Directory will change to cgminer. Or you can rename the folder to something easier.
16. Type "./cgminer -n" this will list all your GPU adapters. If they are not there the driver did not install properly.
17. Open text editor (search in left hand corner again) and enter the following, sort of same as windows but this will be INSIDE your text doc.

For R9 270 your text file will look like this. You need the export commands in every config.

export DISPLAY=:0
export GPU_MAX_PERCENT_ALLOC=100
export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
./cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u carbonite.1 -p abcd - I 19 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 15232 --gpu-fan 80


Use other settings for other cards as above for windows.

SAVE text file > click save, direct to cgminer directory, rename it to whatever you want example miner.sh (you have to add .sh to your name)

To run cgminer in windows you have to direct terminal to your cgminer directory. Open Terminal > cd Desktop > cd cgminer > then type
sh miner.sh and hit enter. This will start cgminer.

Read through Section 2 for tips and things to take in to consideration.

**BAMT 1.3+

Download BAMT 1.3 or 1.5 for R9 series cards - https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=2924.0
and BAMT 1.4 for HD7xxx series.

SECURITY WARNING BAMT is made by the community, I personally use the software and have not had any issues to date.
You need to setup the software before connecting to the internet (disconnect your telephone line or sim card, you will still need a router do assign IP addresses) BAMT uses a global username and password so its best to change it before you start mining. It will be found in the steps belowe.

1. Install imageUSB = http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/ImageUSB.shtml
2. Run imageUSB > select your flash in list > select Write to UFD > select Borwse > change .bin to .img > select your downloaded BAMT img.
3. Boot PC from BAMT flash with network plugged in, I recommend using a screen for first time setup. You can set it up without screen but not supported in this guide.
4. Once bamt is loaded, click on the network box on the right bottom, you will have to "edit connection" to assign a static IP address.
5. Download Putty http://www.filehippo.com/download_putty/
6. Run putty and type in your miners IP address, leave the port as is, click "yes" when prompted.
6. You will see a terminal screen login. username is "user" and password is "live"
8 Type "sudo passwd" and set a password 8 char long. Type "passwd" to set user password. Must be different from sudo password.
9. Done your passwords are change. You can now connect router or sim to internet again.

FROM HERE ON OUT YOU DO NOT NEED A SCREEN

10. To login into your bamt machine open windows Remote Desktop (you can also use other software like Terminal) In remote desktop type in the IP address of your miner. a screen will pop up, enter "user" as username and your sudo password.
11. open "File manager in menu options > Open bamt > Open cgminer.config.
12. You will see someone elses pool data there, delete it and enter your own in stratum and in http. Same as with windows so example
ltc.give-me-coins.com:333
13. Edit your GPU settings -WITHOUT CORRECT SETTINGS AND POOL SETTINGS BAMT WILL NOT RUN!
Just like windows you can use commas to set different settings for different cards



14. Save and exit. Power down and turn on again.

NOTE: BAMT for some reason does not like "Reboot" it hangs sometime just when bamt loads. So Power down and power up for every reboot. Will be fixed in later version probably. This way you are sure your PC will mine and get stuck on loading bamt.

Your PC should now be mining, you can check by opening Terminal in menu list and typing "screen -ls" should show cgminer and then "screen -r" this will open sgminer/cgminer

Also you can use the Web Dashboard found under BAMT status in the menu.

Just a few things about controlling your BAMT via Mac (if like me you have no pc/win systems)

- Mac has a built in SSH application ---> terminal
- Basically run terminal window, type "ssh root@yourMiner'sIPhere"
---> it will ask you if you are sure --> type yes, then it will ask you for the password --> this is the password you setup on your BAMT while setting it up, default is "live"
- This will bring up a root menu ssh interface for BAMT
- From here you can launch gpumon, or see what your miner is doing (type "screen -r") reboot, edit your config files etc

It might be too early to tell, but mining with the 7990 Malta has not produced any issues? Touch wood...After reading this it seems the card is suitable for mining. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=187328.0

Also, I have mine underclocked to 1.095, which is around the same voltage my 280x uses...

This is the reason why I can not recommend the MALTA for mining... I know some people use them but they are not on my trusted list of GPU's for mining. This was on a Platinum PSU.

Did that person undervolt them though? If we are thinking of the same person, he told me he ran them at stock voltage of 1.2v and never tried undervolting them?

If we take the 7990 apart somewhat we basically have two 7970's or 280x's, which in a single card setup run at 1.094v or 1.1v.

Currently I am running the 7990 at 1.095v per core at 1000/1500 settings, which i think knocks off a large chunk of the total amps going through the cables. Easily amounting to around 250w per core.

I know other aspects will come into play around efficiency, board design as well as rail loads, but essentially running two 280x's at their "proper" voltages will be a lot less stressful than running them at 1.2v, as the person in question did :)

Obviously I could be proved wrong by an exploding PSU, but for 3 months now its been running fine.

I agree, I would not have run these cards without the voltage being lower. Definitely would have traded them for other cards.

Sometimes on some restarts one of the cores does not use the correct voltage. In this regard I have a failsafe in which the temperature the card reaches on 1.2v shuts down that core from mining (temp-cutoff arg), then when cgwatcher reports lower than expected hash rate, the PC restarts and usually the correct voltage is applied on the next restart...

But yeah, for noobs, not recommended :p

Just another fix: Under Section 2:

The problem is highlighted in bold above, there should be no space between "-" and "I". Thus, the correct way:

You are correct there is no space between "-" and a setting. Also note 2 word instructions have "--" infront of it.
And sorry I know that one incorrect spacing or "-" will cause your miner to not load up at all!

Well, I'm not getting any problems. My Hashrate just seems low.

GPU: HD7870 LE
Keeping everything stock
Core Clock: 975
Memory Clock 1500

I'm getting ~290Kh/s with these settings (cgminer):
cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u XXXXX -p XXXXX -I 18 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 16000

Now this is my gaming PC, so I'll only be mining with it during working hours and sometimes at night, until my R9 280X arrives.

With the above (time and hashrate) and the calculations from gox, I calculated that I'll be making like R37 a month........ So, not worth it. But, atleast I got my toe wet and know how things work (sort of).

Does the Hashrate seem a bit low? I've read on other forums guys getting 400 Kh/s with almost the exact same settings. I'm not even getting near that.
 
Well, I'm not getting any problems. My Hashrate just seems low.

GPU: HD7870 LE
Keeping everything stock
Core Clock: 975
Memory Clock 1500

I'm getting ~290Kh/s with these settings (cgminer):
cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u XXXXX -p XXXXX -I 18 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 16000

Now this is my gaming PC, so I'll only be mining with it during working hours and sometimes at night, until my R9 280X arrives.

and core 950 mem 1250

The --gpu-engine 950 --gpu-memclock 1250 doesn't work when I run the script. Have to do it in MSI Afterburner.

Ah man you have the LE which is basically a 7950 :) So settings will be different... Hang on let me see.

what brand? I have never mined with a LE but it seems to be dud miner. Only thing I can suggest is using powertune + 20, you can set that in afterburner aswell. Set your thread high 24 000, intensity 18 normal clocks
OR
its reported that lower clock speeds than stock improves your hash on the 7970 LE so try that :) like 850 for core.

Get that 280x asap :p and keep on gaming on the LE rather

Yeah, I know it's a dud miner. But still, the h-rates should atleast be op par with a normal 7870. Gaming is where you get the benefits with the card. What does the powertune function do? It's the PowerColor AX 7870 LE Myst.

Nah, my R9 280X is going to be my Gaming card. Might sell the 7870 LE and get a R9 270 for mining.

I have read power colors going beyond 420 so not sure. You will have to play around as the settings you tried work on other cards. Very strange.

Powertune rises your tdp. If your card is trying to mine and needs a little bit extra juice. by default your card wont allow it. Powertune enables it. It helps on some cards an most multi setups.

My 270 farm does not use it as it has no effect. But worth trying. Will be interesred to see what other people get on 7870 le. The XT aka normal 7870 does not have any problems.

Okay so, with these settings:
cgminer --scrypt -o http://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u XXXX -p XXXX --gpu-engine 860 --gpu-memclock 1500 --gpu-powertune 20 -I 19 --gpu-threads 1 --lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 27000 --worksize 256

I get ~330Kh/s

But weirdly, looking at MSI Afterburner my GPU Usage % looks like this

Could this be due to my GPU boosting or something?

Not sure, but mining should max out your gpu so not sure why that is happenning, unless it is heat throttling? but doubt that.
