Sunday evening, me and my wife where going to have a quiet relaxed braai, and I lit the fire.
And as I was waiting for the charcoal to turn red, I decided to play with our dogs on the couch as I usually do in the evening.

As we where playing and our Dachshund Canis 3 yo fell off the couch about half a meter from the arm rest (ran to fast and could not stop in time) and had a look and she was a okay didn’t even make a sound, played some more and started to braai.

About 10 minutes later my wife noticed she had a very slight limp on her right side, did not think much of it, and must have sprained it slightly.

At this point the dogos are in there bed cause we are going to have dinner and that is when I noticed it’s far worse now (this is a space of 30 minutes) and it is gone from a slight limp to her not being able to walk normally she has weakness in her back legs.

Take her outside and call her over to me to see what is going on and she is unstable and now she is in pain, we call the vet for a emergency and meet her at the vets office.

We get to the vet and she says it is most likely a back injury and that it can be a slipped disc, now we are worried and are given a lot of medicine and told we need to keep her as still as we can, then after two days asses her situation. Also that it will get worse over night with swelling.
I am stunned cause it was not that high and she did not cry or give any indication that she was hurt!

As the vet told us her condition did worsen a bit over night and she was in quite a bit of pain Monday morning, to the point where I need to carry her out to wee and poo, we are giving her all the meds and making sure she is drinking and eating.

Tuesday morning I get up at 4:30 to check on her and she is in considerable pain if you try and move her she mouns and growns, so wake up my wife and tell her we need to get back to the vet as soon as they open up, I did give her, her meds and at 20 to 8 get in the car and drive to the veterinarian.

We wait for them to open and go in as soon as the doors open, give details and we go in to see the vet and suddenly Canis wee’s all over the floor and me as I'm carrying her in to the exam room . After a long check up and the vet explaining the situation to us. At this point I’m in tears and can’t really talk to the vet

Sweet Canis is in bad shape, the vet is almost certain that she has a crushed/slipped disk, and in some terrible pain. She has now lost control of her bowls and bladder also has no feeling in her short little legs or tail.

My wife takes over, asking question and getting the details of how much pain she is in and how much pain she is going to have and the quality of life she can have (I left the room cause I was to emotional at this point) if we take her to a specialist orthopedic surgeon, or take her home for a week to wait and see if she improves and maybe new stronger meds can ease her pain? (they gave us the best pain meds they can give the first visit).

The Surgery rout can maybe work and it will mean more pain and suffering because they can only operate next week, they are in Pretoria as well, plus the recovery if she does 50/50 is long and painful.
After surgery her quality of life will not be as it was before, she will most likely be in pain long after and also it will happen again because of a jump or a stumble down a step and this time it will be worse.

The second option is to take her home and try too keep her as still as possible, for a week and see if things improves. She will still be in pain because we need to move and clean her every time she has a poo or a pee.

And the third option is to have her put down and it will be least painful.

So we did what we thought is the best option to help her get rid of the terrible pain and to not cause any more.

I'm deeply saddened buy this and will take a long time for us both to get over this los of a sweet sweet dog and a truly lovely companion!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and letting me vent on the forum.

It is the worst experience in the world having to make this decision... I remember the time I was in the room for it and I cried like i'd never done for anything else.

I don't think you ever forget it, or really truly get over it... but you will find it in your heart to love another and give another animal a happy home someday... in memory of the ones who had to leave us.

So sorry for your loss, it never gets easier as they just provide unconditional love to us no matter what.

Sorry for the hurt you guys are going through. At least her suffering is over. :(

Thanks for ruining my day with all the sadness too.

Sorry for you loss bud, she is in a better place now. You did the right thing,no matter how wrong it felt, rather then the pain and suffering she had to endure.
They apart of our family, like children to us.

Jho and now im filled with sadness, I dont think I would survive letting shuckle go (shes almost 9)

You did the right thing but I know It was a stupidly hard decision - Sterkte vir julle!

Oh my I'm crying big tears here :(

I'm so sorry for your loss. I also have a Doxie and what happened to her can happen so fast with them. My little one is lekker rough sometimes.

You made the correct decision and I can only imagine how hard this must have been on you guys as well!

Good luck with the time ahead 🤗

Condolences. I absolutely adore daschunds but I have had 2 go the same way, its absolutely heartbreaking.[emoji22]

She was also rough and some times hurt our other dogies but never intentionally, and this was a small fall off the couch that is why it was so unbelievable.
Please make sure yours does not get hurt it was one of the worst things that Me and my wife had to do, at least we where there and she was not afraid, but being there and seeing her fall asleep was horrible and I would not whish it upon my worst enemy.

Don't know if I can ever have a daschund again because of this, can't do it again and not willing to take the risk.
Sorry for your loss know what it feels like.

Im so sorry for your loss man , animals are the most dear to my heart and hope times heals fast and take comfort in knowing you had a wonderful companion and a son or daughter as i call mines.....

8 years ago I adopted Schuckle - my staffy (abusive previous family)
7 years ago I adopted Lobster and Stinky (they were cast a way's - "Rottweiler" mix breeds)
after a few months we realized Lobster and Stinky arent Rottweiler mixes - Stinky is more sausage than anything else.
You have made me so nervous about his back! this weekend I will be building steps for the Couch and bed.
Still moerse sterkte met alles waardeur julle gaan.

It's for this reason I tend to not consider a wors anymore, even though they have the most classical personalities they always end up getting a back injury around the age of 10 sometimes earlier. It's truly a flawed breed in my opinion, it's just cruel that they're the sweetest dogs of all

If our story can help anyone it is good I told it! From what the vet told us about this it is a lot more prone in pure bread daschunds but if you build a ramp it can't hurt.

Next one will be adopted but for now we are not going to get a new pup.
Sometimes a fall can create swelling around the disks, that would also cause paralysis, weakness etc. We have a Lab cross, that was paralyzed for around 3 weeks. I started with Prednisone for swelling immediately (could not find a open vet on a Sunday afternoon) We did the whole swimming pool for strength exercises and physio at home thing.
Now, 4 months later, she is walking (with a swinging weak left leg) and happy as can be.

It would have been a easy option for us, I would have even been fine if we could get her the wheels they make for paralyzed dogs, but the amount of pain she was in (back pain) was just too much and we could see it in her. If the pain could be managed we would have gone down that road but even with injected pain meds she was still in a lot of pain.

I have to honestly say if our Labbie did not start walking, we would have gone the same route as you. It is difficult with wheels etc. We did manage her pain well with Diazepam and other oral meds, but she still had to give her all to get better.
It was touch and go for a few months there. (we have 7 dogs, so they would have played her off her wheels should she have gotten some.....😂we have one boy that chews up everything as well, so the rubber would also not have lasted for long.

We had 2 dachshunds, the one passed away in 2019 from cancer.

The other little shit turned 13 this year, 5 back operations in. Although she is not quite as mobile as she used to be, and this will eventually cause her end, it doesn't stop the abundance in attitude. Still does what she wants, when she wants.

For the dax folks. Need to build/buy a few of these. We did something similar.
