Need some help with deciding on new upgrade CPU (i9/5900x)

Hi Guys.

So I have watched a few videos and done some research about the latest cpu's and I still don't know what to get.

I currently have a i7 4790 and want to upgrade my cpu since 1440p is not running that well anymore - I am in two minds trying to decide between the i9 11900k and the Ryzen 9 5900X since they are my max budget - That is also the only ones I did research on - If there are cpu's which give a similar performance but at a lower cost then please, let me know.

I had a chat to guys at Wootware and they recommend the ryzen above the intel and says it is better yet gaming videos on Youtube show the i9 having a very very slight edge, and in some cases the 5900X is better although I have noticed the i9 using way more Watt.

I am not familiar at the current state as to what is "good" and which one will be the most future proof for the next few years, that is why I am rather asking you guys.

If I do go for the i9 11900k, is it possible to grab the ASUS Rog Strix Z490-E Gaming with it or should I def get a Z590? Is a z490 going to give me issues? I really really like that MB

In the case of Ryzen, I have never used AMD before and have no idea which range motherboards to get.

The RAM I currently want is G.Skill F4-4000C18D-32GTZN Trident Z Neo 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-4000MHz CL18 1.4V - Is this good RAM? Would anyone suggest any other ram.

Budget is as follow: 10k cpu, 4k MB, 3.5k RAM

Regarding CPU Cooler - I currently have a Hyper 212X - Guy from Wootware said it will be no good for the new cpu's - He suggested the Scythe or something? I prefer an Air cooler (I also dont overclock)
 
First and most importantly, do not purchase 4000Mbps kits for Ryzen. Unless you enjoy tweaking and OCing, it’s not going to work in a plug&play scenario.

Unless you tweak the FCLK and UCLK, you’ll literally be running 4000Mbps/2000MHz RAM, 1000MHz FCLK and 1000MHz UCLK because of the auto tuning Ryzen boards do when they detect XMP frequencies above a certain threshold. In terms of getting 2000 FCLK and UCLK stable for 1:1:1 operation - good luck.

I need to say that right off the bat because you’re the third person now who has overlooked this and it shouldn’t be on you to know these things because AMD and Intel don’t inform their customers well enough.

In terms of i9 vs 5900X. I hope you don’t mean the 11900K haha. If you mean 5900X vs 10850K, R7600 vs R9500 is a joke and the i9 wins by a landslide in overall performance for the money.

Reasons you would consider the 5900X would be if you need PCIe 4.0 (doubtful), you do rendering and workstation tasks that heavily favour the Ryzen chip and the higher core count (very important because time = money in that regard), or if the games you play favour Ryzen significantly (World War Z and console ports for instance). If you play Warzone however, then certainly pick up the 10850K as WZ needs needs needs low CPU-RAM latency.

You’d be able to pair the 10850K with the TridentZ 4000C18 kit as 10th gen IMCs tend to fair decently with higher memory controller frequencies. Please be mindful of the VCCSA and VCCIO voltages that your motherboard sets with the XMP profile though. If you’re going to grab the 10850K, I’d suggest grabbing the Z490 AORUS Ultra for R3600 to pair with it.

As a waaaaay off topic point: if you’re into 3DMark, Geekbench and some other CPU benchmarks; the 5900X will pull away in certain physics and CPU tests and you’ll be able to overall run higher frequency memory and 3DMark tends to ignore memory controller freq as do some other benchmarks. Point in case, my 5900X and X570 Unify could daily 5000Mbps RAM, but my current cheapie 10700KF can’t even boot at above 4266Mbps with VCCIO and SA temporarily cranked to the sky with auto timings. Basically that shit is never hitting a high memory freq/bandwidth, not even close to what my Ryzen was capable of.

AMD CPUs are way more complex than Intel.
And taken in consideration that you never used AMD before, go Intel.

AMD CPUs work the way Intel CPUs work - you pop them in the motherboard, add some thermal paste and a cooler. Then you switch on the PC, install Windows and gooi. Nothing complicated about it.

Either way, there's no need to get 4000MHz RAM. The benefit from higher RAM speeds is marginal unless you really have the patience and knowhow to tweak the timings. Grab yourself a 3600MHz kit and you'll be just fine. Use the money you saved to upgrade some other aspect of the system or buy a game.

The 11900K loses in most scenarios because the two fewer cores can’t be compensated for by the ‘IPC increase’ that Intel were claiming. Not to mention at R9600 it’s an absolute joke. The 5900X demolishes it, like it wouldn’t even be close.

The 11900K is slower than the R2000 cheaper 10850K and the 10850K trades nasty blows with the 5900X, and takes the WZ crown.

In terms of Z490 Ultra vs Strix-E - ahh you could grab that too. If you mean the Strix board that’s R4000 then yeah for an extra R400 it’s decent. The Ultra itself is a good board but the VRM isn’t exactly enthusiast-grade anyway. The Master at R3700 was the real deal but that’s sold out now.

I personally prefer the Ultra though because I know Asus likes to piggy-back off of branding and not give their customers value (anyone can fight me if they disagree, it’s the dang truth). I also actually just think it looks superior to the Strix board.

With regards to VCCIO and SA, high speed kits and kits with fragile XMPs overall tend to be spec’d with higher auto motherboard voltages on those two rails. I once saw a PC with a 9700K running with 1.35 IO and 1.4 SA for a 3600 C17 Gskill TridentZ kit. I was flabbergasted and immediately instructed the individual with it to lower them because there genuinely is no reason to force that much voltage through those two rails.

Just gaming - No work.

I currently have a MSI 1070 Gaming X - Going to grab a 3070ti next month - First want to do the upgrade kit

I have a ViewSonic 1440p IPS Gsync 165hz Monitor

4th gen i7 and 1070 at 1440p simply doesn't work anymore lol - Think I got like 40fps in the Battlefield 2042 beta on low...

The Strix E is currently R3400 at E which we don't want to name - Its a really good price. Would you recommend I rather save 2k and buy the 10850k? Also, is there stock available for it?

Personally I would wait a month or so before deciding unless you HAVE to upgrade now. Intel Alder Lake is due to launch on 4 November and will make the current Intel 11th gen obsolete and at least drop the price of the 11th gen stuff as the channel gets rid of the old stock.

It's performance is still all hype and unknown but why spend 17k now for it to be obselete in a month. I'd hold my horses until the launch and maybe even try score some deals on Black Friday based on how the market looks after Alder Lake

Only thing that I am scared of is stock issues. I asked Wootware about that, and they also mentioned the price will prob be high for Alder Lake and stock will be low due to a silicon shortage.

So I don't think the 10/11th gen will get any cheaper soon... I dont have to upgrade now, I am more scared of loosing out on something.

I will also only buy this one time, and only after a few (4-5) years again
 
The Strix E is currently R3400 at E which we don't want to name - Its a really good price. Would you recommend I rather save 2k and buy the 10850k? Also, is there stock available for it?

The Strix E at R3400 is a great deal. Grab the 10850K I reckon. 3600 C16 Gskill would be a very safe kit to buy, but odds are the 4000 C18 kit will work fine. @Sandrain might want to give his opinion on that statement because I might be wrong (I didn’t find it that easy to boot up 4000 on my personal chip so…).

I think if you want something nice, grab the 3600 16-16-16-36 B-Die kit for R4270. If you prefer the gold kit for 3800 then aesthetics isn’t necessarily a bad motivation.

True. @Transformer09 I don’t personally see much promise in DDR5 and the motherboard prices are set to be horrendous along with the launch CPU prices. There’s a good chance that the stock prices for 10th and 11th gen will drop through and if you haven’t invested yet, you could save R2000 maybe by being patient. I considered it myself but I need a PC to use.

I don’t personally see much promise in DDR5 and the motherboard prices are set to be horrendous along with the launch CPU prices.
PCIe 5.0 and DDR5, just the extra signal integrity protections has got to cost a fortune. PCIe 4.0 was already expensive spec to fulfil. Can be thankful that 12VO isn't a standard yet because if that ever passes the motherboards are going to become something else.


Good suggestions here, 10850K is going to offer significantly more value than either of the other options and not getting a bad price on the Mobo.
 
Quick update: just came across another DDR5 victim. Adata’s kit has an XMP of 6800 46-46-46-109 KEKW 🤣🤣🤣🤣
 
So happy that I bought the Motherboard last night. I paid R3399 for the Asus Strix Z490-E and I see its back up to 5k today.

Couldn’t wait so I grabbed the i9 10850k with Trident Z CL16 3600mhz 32GB

Now just to get a decent cooler

Couldn’t wait so I grabbed the i9 10850k with Trident Z CL16 3600mhz 32GB

Now just to get a decent cooler

Just to mention, I don’t overclock so always used air coolers in the past.

The 280mm will be a superior option to the 240mm. In terms of aesthetics, I guess you could make an argument for the X53. Air cooler-wise, I'd say one of the Scythes wouldn't be a bad idea.

Question, what does the small lcd at the bottom of the Motherboard display?

Is it the same as my MSI Gaming 5 which shows the temperature of the CPU?

Debug output. Displays error codes (better than just binary LEDs like some boards). My previous MSI displayed debug output during post and CPU temp during opertation.

Still have my 1070 but going to get a 3070ti soon... Also have 5x120mm fans, 2x140mm and 1x200mm

I’d say the X73 at R2800 is a very decent deal. In terms of your PSU, yeah 750W is definitely enough for a 3070 Ti/10850K. Don’t try and do a 3090 though haha. Basically any card with a VBIOS power limit above 350W is a no-no.
 
Can anyone please explain to me why my pc keeps going to the bios when I power it up?

I installed my new cpu, motherboard and Ram but it keep going to the bios and not windows?

I also cant find an option to change the bootable device to my ssd with windows on in the Asus bios

Are you sure your ssd is powered and connected to the board correctly sounds like a detection issue rather than anything else. There should be a hardware monitor tab/page where you can view what is connected to the board as well, might be helpful in seeing if the device is connected or not.

Thanks I will check tomorrow. Left pc at work.

Strange, connected 2 ssd’s and one 2tb harddrive and couldnt see any of them.

Will it make a difference is if connected them in a different order then my previous build?

As I dont want to install windows again and loose all my stuff
