Hi all

So there’s a new 86 coming and it’s potentially going to be closer to the original Supra than the current Supra ever was: RWD, turbocharged and 255bhp.

I think this is a great option as the new Supra is hideously expensive and not everyone’s cup of tea. An 86 with Supra-Like traits might be more like it.

Certainly, it’s closer to my dads ‘89 Supra which has an in-line 6 twin turbo layout.

Hmmm...no doubt extra power is a desirable thing, but it's going to mean beefier suspension, brakes and tires, along with extra interior trimmings to compete with the others in its new class.
All that means extra weight and extra cost.

All the reviews of the current 86 point to the car's simplicity, skinny tires and (relatively) low power as positive traits. There's something fun about wringing the neck of a low powered car, rather than casually leaning on a high-powered car for the same effect.

I'd love an 86 with some extra power, as long as they don't lose sight of what made the first car so much fun.

Yeah it’s much better being able to drive a car at 100% most of the time, versus too much and only getting to use 50% most of the time and maybe 80% some of the time.

Reason why switching from a Superbike to my “slow” Buell was the best decision I ever made.

That being said 255 Bhp isn’t too crazy.

Still think the GR Yaris is cooler than the 86 and the Zupra3

They made a hot Yaris before. It was expensive and crap compared to the competitors.

If I recall, it used a 2.0 NA engine, not unlike the Clio 2.0. However, it drove like a marshmallow and didn’t feel premium, unlike the Polo GTI which was cheaper and better in every way.

Maybe, but people were asking for more power and some people have done some insane engine swaps with it (Ferrari 458 engine swap anyone?).

I think that the extra weight might just beef up the car and if they keep the weight distribution as good as it was, there's no reason why people wouldn't prefer it over the slower model. You'd still be able to slide it and have fun, especially if they can keep the weight of the new engine down.

Maybe there's a gap between the 2L NA model and the BMW built Supra that would make people happy?

Yeah the hot yaris was a 1.8 1zz vvti motor. Same as in the 180i corolla. They should have used the 2zz vvtl-i instead which is the 180i from the runX rsi. They still look pretty good though apart from the fake exhaust lip.

have a GT86 Now - the new one looks really good ......
Its a fantastic car ..... hopefully it just gets better.... and not one of those one where you go "I wish you hadnt"
The precipice of the original GT86 was affordable ..... Hopefully the new one will be too.... I have my doubts though.

Well currently the 86 is from R630k which is a lot of money for little car. So the new one will probably be +-R700k. My opinion is wait until Supra depreciates and get that instead of this.

Ah yeah well our market is just shit. Its like a $29 900 car over seas (R420 000) - but yeah 2nd hand would be best. The 2nd hand price of 86's are quite good in this country. Got mine for a steal with a service plan.

I was super disappointed when I drove the current 86. I was looking forward to buying one in 2018, but the car was just too bland. Ended up with a fiesta st. If the 86 had 250hp I would've bought one without a doubt.

Interesting ..... its 200HP, and its not blow your fur back, thrust your head into the headrest of your seat - but its by no means a small amount.
But I guess it was just not something you were looking for and fair enough.

I have yet to take mine around a track ..... would like to but I need better tyres first.

Just get the new Mazda mX5 RF with rev upped to 9500rpm [emoji14] looks better and cheaper . Toyota 86 is way overpriced

Looking at the engine specs Subaru FA engine - Wikipedia and having watched a mighty car mods video on Subaru engines, all Subaru really does to increase displacement is change the bore of the cylinder block.

The block is the same for the 2.0 and the 2.4, so the increase in mass would come from the larger conrods, turbocharged, intercooler, other bits like a blow-off valve and so on that aren’t made from Aluminium or are added components.

I can’t see it adding a whole heap more weight but the suspension would be upgraded to deal with the added unsprung weight and power.

It didn't have that 'it' factor for me though. Was nice sliding around, but other than that, the car just felt meh. It wasn't encouraging or exciting for me at all. It looks the part, but did nothing for me in the drivers seat. I truly expected an exciting driver's car.

The ST just won me over by the go-cart like qualities and the excitability when driving it. Not as refined as the 86, and it's a plastic toy car inside... But its just a thrill to drive and zoom around in.

I now realise that 200hp in a 86 and 200hp in a fiesta are two different things.

I would probably enjoy the 86 when we are in the regions of 300hp, or thereabouts. I've driven one with a supercharged one and it kept me quite busy behind the wheel.

so true!!!! Ive been around tracks much quicker in turbo boxes but nothing comes close to the feels you get from a 1.6 valvey tech box at the limit around a corner

Toyota would never do that...Same as making a Polo GTI quicker than the Golf

At R201 000 and with a 0-100 time of 9ish seconds, I think they should have gone for the more powerful engine.

You could get cars that performed better than that for not much more, looked better and weren't a Yaris (being a Yaris is the key problem).

The Toyota 86 starts at R550 028.02 here in the UK (Googled pounds to rand) and I'm not surprised. Cars here are cheaper as a base cost but the other expenses add up.

These are the costs that really nail you:
  1. Insurance
  2. Petrol
  3. MOT costs
  4. Road tax

Anything vaguely interesting means that insurance goes through the roof, petrol is £1.29 a litre and road tax starts at £149 for a elcheapo car.

Decent 2nd hand 86 here is about R230K, and insurance is about R880.00 P/M (maybe a bit less if you over 25)
