Car starting to moan and groan. What's that sound?

Agree with Skalabala, you paid for a service, have them do it properly/demand repair costs returned or sue them, didn't happen but you could've so easily been on a long distance journey and the motor runs dry along the way, leaving you stuck who knows where.

I took it back in this morning. Seemed like someone else was there shouting and fighting with them. The mechanic that helped me quickly got my keys and said he will sort it out..... So lets see

Reminds me of an incident that happened at Barons, old mechanic that they were pushing towards retirement, the job that cemented it, he was busy doing the service on a new polo, the 1000km oil change, when done they called the owner, owner arrived and took the car, only for it to die around the corner, he went back and barons towed the car back to their workshop, reason for the car dying, the old man forgot to put the sump nut back after draining the oil, he put in new oil but it all drained out into the drain pan under the car, they had to provide a brand new motor to the client because of that tiny mistake, that let to catastrophic failure of the engine.

Oh snap that is a big error! The guy working on my car is young. I didn't stop to give him a hard time, but I did tell him there was way to much oil in the car and to double check the dipstick when he is done. I assumed that was obvious but I thought I would say it anyway

I get it mistakes happen, just fix my car 😭

Then there's the BMW F80 M3 incident at BMW, not sure which branch it happened but basically the guy also took his car in for the 1k service (they also get software tweaked to open the motor up on the 1k service) so his tracking company phones him and tells him they'll have to inform his insurance company of his reckless driving, he asked them to hold off and he'll make a turn by them, he arrives and they print him the report and he explains to them what's happened and told them to include that in the report to the insurance as he provided them proof of the car being booked in at bmw at the time of the incident, bmw phones him to collect his car, upon arrival they're all smiles with him, until they tried to hand him his key and he refused to take it, car was clocked at +230km on the tracker, when he spoke to the manager they tried to lie their way out of it but he refused to take the car as he told them who knows what damage could've been done and what lies ahead for him, he as the owner doesn't drive the car so aggressively (car was redlined basically through all it's gears to get to 230km then kept there) he told them they've just bought themselves an M3 back as hes not taking it back, was a back and forth until he contacted their headquarters in Munich, they told bmw South Africa to replace the car immediately and deal with the person who drove the car so reckless, he was given good advice to leave the car with them as the car didn't leave their premises they had to keep it and anything that happened is on them, day after Germany kaked out S.A, they called him and told him to come and pick out a new car and apologized to him, little too late as some of their managers knows what the mechs do and how they drive the customers cars.

Seems the sump is still leaking so they are going to keep the car for the weekend to "monitor" the leak.... I duno, seems fishy

I hope they not going to try take my tiny fiat for a race around the track :p

Im actually more worried that my car is going to get used over the weekend for criminal activity, not saying they are dodgey, but you never know

Lol, no need to monitor, it either leaks or it doesn't, that's a stall tactic, clean up where the leak was, if they did actually fix it, let it idle and see if it's fixed, doesn't take a weekend to monitor.

A fiat leaking oil? Isn't that just a feature?

Do they maybe need to let the car sit after the re-seal ? or can it be driven straight after?

Probably stalling for time yes. maybe they ran out of time today

Depending on what is actually leaking, hopefully they didn't just try and prop up the leak with a shit ton of silicone, if it's the sump gasket and depending on the quality silicone, it should be ready to drive after about 25 ish minutes, on my personal vehicle's I dont even wait, cause by the time I come out under the car, the silicone should basically be cured as I only use a thin layer for insurance, the gasket does all the work, silicone just fills in where there could be imperfections.

For this you need a time card from them, time the car was dropped and time it was picked up, with the owner's signature on it, if any bs happened with your car over the weekend, that's part of your proof the vehicle was in their possession.
Helps for any potential traffic fines as well.

Should I rather just go pick the car up and take it back on monday? I doubt they will give me a time card or anything of the sort

I mean could they role back the odometer and just say they didn't drive the car?

Leave it there, come Monday they just might have 'booked' other jobs, leaving your car down the pecking order, plus if they filled the car with the correct amount of oil, who knows how far you can actually drive with it, if anything now happens they could blame you stating you picked up the car whilst they're were in the middle of fixing it.

Camera's don't lie, if there was any fines it would be proof of them driving it, I don't think they'll risk driving a car that leaks the amount of oil you described, if that motor seizes, it's a complete overhaul on your engine with them footing the bill...

I might do a surprise visit tomorrow as they are open on Saturdays to see how the car is doing.

Yip, definitely do that, show up unannounced and ask them the progress, it doesn't take a weekend to check whether an oil leak has been sealed properly, few hrs at most.

So they phoned me on Saturday to let me know that they think the leak is coming from between the engine and the gear box and they would have to remove the gearbox to see if that is where the leak is coming from. He asked if it is fine if they remove the gear box. I hesitated (who knows if they are competent enough to remove and correctly install the gearbox again. )

Told him to just go ahead with it. He said he wont charge for removing the gear box if they don't find the leak there :cautious:

Won't charge you if the leak ain't there, that's a load of bs, haven't you already paid them to stop the leak, if so, they need to repair the leak, they can't double charge you, possible that the rear main seal has started to leak but it would clearly be visible, it's not like there's an airtight seal between motor and box, with the amount of oil you say it's leaking, one quick look under the car and you'd be able to see the oil leaking between the motor and box.
If it's in fact the rear main seal, those are cheap anyway, not like they're gonna have to spend alot on it, a good quality seal should cost between R150-250 I use the febi seals on my personal vehicle's, they've never let me down.
Basically, box comes off + (if manual) clutch, pressure plate and flywheel, then you look directly into the seal, I usually take a sharp object and hit a hole into the old seal, then use a tool with a hook, put into the hole and pull the old seal, gently tap in the new seal with a mallet.
The above is only if the seal does come loose from the housing, some engines has them bonded to the housing and only sells as a unit like the 2003-05 VW polo's for those you have to loosen the sump to fit.

They just called me 2 min ago.

So yes the rear seal needs to be replaced. "oh and we also noticed your clutch is on its way out and we should replace that to for R4000"
SERIOUSLY what a load of shit. I told him leave the clutch alone, ill rather drive the car until the clutch breaks..... Im not spending R4k on this cheap car. Might as well reaplce the whole engine or better and buy a different car.....

So they want to charge R800 to replace the seal

Ask them for the seal number, if it's a separate seal the number should be something along the line like 110-90-10 (the numbers could be lower but in a sequence similar to that) then ask if you can supply your own seal, they'll likely say they can't guarantee the job if bringing your own parts but just get the part number and call Alert, masterparts, midas or goldwagon and get a quote on a febi or even elring seal, should be waay cheaper than their quote, if your clutch didn't slip or judder during driving and the pedal was good, tell them to leave the clutch alone, on my beemer a sachs or LUK kit cost like 2.5k so not sure where they're getting their pricing from.

Pretty sure they are going to put in a cheaper seal and then just charge me R700 for labour.... Same with the clutch, R2k and probably charge R2k labour.

I don't see any other workshop charging less than R800 for removing the gearbox and a seal replacement, unfortunately.
If the leak doesn't stop after this they must fix it for FreeRand

Definitely, just miffed here you paid them to fix a leak and they didn't do it 1st time round, a quick clean up and then check before stripping would've shown the location of the leak 1st time around, instead of guessing it's the sump, their guessing cost you money at the end of the day.

Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk
If they qouted you R800 in the beginning to replace the seal, I'd say it's a fair price for labour plus part.

Yes I agree, they just assumed it was the SUMP because they didn't feel like looking further.
I will never know if the sump was maybe leaking as well 🤷‍♂️

Looks like its touch and go with these guys. Definitely going to tell people in my neighbourhood to steer clear of them
