Hello gentlefolk.

Help a guy decide here...

Next upgrade will be team red (from my current 2600k).

Settled on the 3600 (games and CAD primary use). Coupled with 16gb of 3600 ram, aorus gtx 1080 extreme. Will have a single 1tb m.2. Do not intend to overclock.

I am bouncing around on board choice...

Prudence says:

Get a solid but unadorned board, cheap and a good performer. (a b450 tomahawk)
Sli is not all that effective
On board WiFi is not all that nessesary

CUD says:

Buy a strix-570-e
Onboard WiFi is cool, no clutter
A second 1080 is a reasonable thing to do, even if it doesn't scale perfectly. (sli)
No need to flash bios
Pretty
Support for an Uber cpu if I desire.

What I want:
Newer tech
The WiFi thing
Sli support
"future proof"

What I NEED:
1 m2 slot
1 pcix 3 slot
3600 cpu support.

Extra cash required is not a massive issue, but less is more when it comes to money leaving my account ideally.

I will accept recommendations if those of you in the know are feeling teachy.

TIA

Not sure if @RebelTech still running that promo with free cm cooler on MSI boards kindly check with them

Get a B450 Tomahawk. It’ll handle a 3700X easily.

Even if the X570 board has a few extra features, it’s stupid.

SLI isn’t a thing anymore and even Nvidia admits it. It’s only useful for breaking 3Dmark records. Games don’t really support it.

Order the B450 and get the retailer to update the BIOS for you.

@RebelTech @wootware

I did a 3600 build with a b450 tomahawk this week, you can update the bios with a flash drive without a cpu in the mobo, wootware did the update for me. I was not a fan of the bios, its very basic but it does what it has to. 3600 is great, the stock cooler not so much, id advise you upgrade the cooler if you dont like constant whining noise coming from your system.

Noise is not a concern for me. If temps stay below 80 under load on the stock cooler I will be fine.

Yup, bios flashback is not an issue on the tomahawk, my (only mildly significant) concern is the ram speed cap... The 3600 cl16 ram I am planning on getting will be just slightly hobbled by the board(it would seem). And I will need to run a Lan cable or use an aftermarket wifi module...

I imagine my primary issue here is philosophical. Last time I built a machine was back in 3rd year varsity, I had minimal money and needed to make all the right prudent compromises because there was no other option. Now that I have my big boy pants on and cost isn't really an issue (within reason), I am getting greedy.

In the 450 range, I had settled on the tomahawk, is that the general consensus for a sensible b450 chipset?

I encoded some footage in handbrake and the temps went above 80c with the stock cooler. AMD specifies the max temp as 95c.

Yes, the Tomahawk is the one board most reviewers have suggested because of its beefy VRM setup. It can handle even a Ryzen 9 series.

As for cooling, the money you save should be it towards an Hyper 212X.

I have been looking at the tomahawk board for my build as well, however with the many good reviews it has got, it has also got just as many issues with the bios from what I read so far,the bios for the Ryzen 3 CPU support is still a beta and they had to strip the extra features from the bios as this board only has 128Mb flash rom chips.
They seem to be coming out with a Max version which will increase the ROM size to 256Mb.

Guys are also complaining of system crashes and BSOD.(There are many reddits discussions of this)

Im now thinking of going for the ASROCK B450- Pro4 as it seems to be the "safe" option.
Granted its not gamer inclined with the RGB Mumbo Jumbo etc, but if you can live with a normal looking board and dont need to overclock it seems to be a pretty good option.

Maybe someone on the forum can give 1st hand advise of this board.

So I`ve done a lot of research on these boards and even though i love Asus ,their B450 boards were sub-par and all the regular big names are guilty of it. After a watching a ton of reviews and even Buildzoids 40min reviews on each board the MSI B450 Tomahawk is the only logical choice when it comes to B450 with the Asrock pro 4 a close second.

In regards to the bios they have updated it quite a few times already and are way passed beta stage. I used the bios flashback via usb with no cpu installed and it all went as smooth as can be. Once i slotted in the CPU everything booted up 1st time with no hastle and I`ve not had a single crash or BSOD (its over a month now).

In regards to features being stripped you are both wrong and right. The UI has been stripped down so all the fancy MSI red dragons etc in the background when you`re in the bios is all gone due to low mb flash roms and the only one feature that i saw removed escapes me now but it had to do with raid arrays. Like you said they are coming out with the max versions to sort this out but even without that who really cares how fancy your bios looks? You set it up and you`re good to go.

The pros on this board far outweigh those cons and given it has the best VRM`s in the B450 range it was a no brainer for me and i really really wanted an Asus board but at the end it wasn`t worth getting a sub-par board.

They have also just updated the bios last week with added memory compatibility which i havn`t checked out properly yet and i havn`t installed it yet either.

VERY informative, thank you.

Thanks for the much needed info,Just made my decision so much harder again

Haha check Buildzoids channel out on youtube. He delves in pretty deep to each mobo right down to mosfets and chips etc. Even shows you the fake chokes on boards that are there to fool you into thinking the board is beefier than it actually is (Think of dummy exhausts on some cars) lol.

The MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC is also a good board. Pretty much has the same VRM`s as the tomahawk but has wifi and fancier RGB on the heatsink shrouds. The extra R500 ou are paying is pretty much just for those extra features.

You chaps are not making the decision easier... :)

My primary reason for upgrade at this point is that I am a little unhappy with the performance of my pc in bfv, but I could just be being stupid. I am averaging 80fps with .1%lows of 45ish on high, @1080p, 60hz.

Its mostly just fine, but those 45fps stutters get to me.

Will I get a suitable fps increase with a 3600 upgrade to get me to over 100fps with no dips below 60?

I watched this review, and to be honest it steered me towards the asus tuf x570 plus...

i currently have the ASUS B450-i strix board
which i wont need to upgrade until the new socket comes out.

2x m.2
1x pcie (so wont work for you if you need SLI support)
4x sata 6gb (you may need more)

look at expansion
such as AUDIO boosters (audio, digital creation)
PCIE (m.2) adptors for RAID support 4x m.2 (super speed storage)
storage expansion via a PCIE adaptor 4x 6gb (mini storage server)
Elgato 4k60 pro capture card (for when youd like to stream)

boards to maybe look at (evetech & wootware links used for information)
rebeltech - wootware - evetech for suppliers

For more research check out the links below

Hardware unboxed spoke about this subject
B450 / X470 and then the newer x570 (but waaaay overkill)

Newer chipset, solid vrm, pcie4, native support for faster ram in a (relatively) cheap board.
You do know that unlike intel, Ryzens memory controller is on the CPU? The board has very little influence over memory compatibility. Thats why Ryzen 1st and 2nd gen couldnt clock higher on memory regardless of the board. They've fixed that with 3rd gen. Either way the choice is yours.

Didn't know, thought it was board dependent...

I’m pretty sure Intel moved their RAM controller to the CPU ages ago, but I could be wrong.

Either way, the board has very little to do with the memory control.

Wow. Look at how shit some of the X470 boards are?

That’s why you can’t make a blanket statement like ‘only X470 for Ryzen 2’.

Based on that, I might aim for the B450 Carbon Pro as the VRMs are listed as quite beefy and it has WiFi built in.

Yip and if you follow the link at the bottom it goes into a bit more detail...be it in German
