Today I received a call asking me whether I made any airbnb purchases x2 R3668 on my credit card. I of course said no and a fraud case was opened my existing card blocked and a new card ordered. I was then told that an investigation will be done and finalised within 15days. The lady could not provide me an answer to the loss I incurred on my credit card but assured me the matter will be dealt with an outcome at the end of this period.

Mu question is how could this have happened without my authorisation and what are the chances of a positive outcome for me?

Decent. I mean this was years back but after we returned from a Germany trip but my dad supposedly bought 2 15K laptops 2 days after we returned. After an investigation which yes, took a few days, everything was reversed. It turns into theft for whoever sold something to the fraudulent CC,...although in case of AirBNB that's gonna be harder I guess, and they just claim back from insurance.

And how is simple as well, somewhere you were in the last 2-3 days your card was cloned. We expect it was at a Disney store they had in the Airport. Dunno for you but anything new or different you did or experienced is suspect.

I recently had a problem, where I suspect my credit card was cloned on a business trip. A few days after arriving home (a Monday morning), I woke up to find over R3500 worth of purchases at 03:00 that morning.

I logged onto the FNB app and reported the transactions as fraud. The card was blocked and a replacement ordered.

That evening, I was refunded the fraudulent purchases. The Friday my new card arrived.

I suspect you should have a positive outcome.

This happened to a friend of mine in Western Cape and she was paid back within 2 weeks.
The amount was however not as much as yours.

Do you authorise with your cell phone? If so, then it must be an inside job at the bank as they would have to do a sim swap to be able to authorise on your number or bypass the authorisation.

A lot of pos machines can fall back to offline transaction where it will be processed batch when going online again

Makes sense with POS machines, the incident I spoke about was online purchase. Not sure if this airbnb was also online. I wonder if online purchases can also be batched?

I certainly hope so...yours was speedily resolved. I have to wait for 15 days for a decision to be made.

I avoid using my phone but did transact via laptop and tablets though. Still very curious to know how they managed to bypass systems or gained access...these are cunning buggers.

Curious to know that answer as well.

I can buy games on STEAM with my CC without needing an OTP, but not on Takealot. All systems are not equal?

The security features offered are based on the gateway they use and the costs. That in turn affects how they and you are insured against fraud

The short of it is the less secure the method the less they are likely paying on a transaction, but the more issues they'll have with fraudulent payments

Ever done a credit card purchase over the phone/fax? Yes its a thing

Offline standin limits are normally pretty low. Couple hundred Rand locally, not too much more for UK/US. Some markets, the operator can force a standin with manager approval. Not 100% sure but I think retailers accept liability for standin transactions.

Fallback is when the swipy card machine can’t read the chip and the card is swiped. Or the mag stripe can’t be read and the PAN is manually entered. Only one fallback is allowed for a transaction.

None of this is applicable to an Airbnb purchase though. 😶

This is why you always purchase goods using your credit card - all purchase with a credit card are insured as a standard feature so even if they empty your account, you should get your money back.

Each bank is different with their process, it took a week to get my R15 000 back, with Nedbank, when my card was cloned. A friend was refunded after a month, by Absa.

If you give out your PIN number to a stranger and they clone your card to withdraw money, the bank won’t refund you. You were an idiot and that’s not a standard insurance feature.

Update: fraud case finalized and refund done via sms. Will most probably receive funds in the account in the next 2 days.

Generally as long as you had the card in your possession you'll have no problem getting it refunded.
