When I read the thread title:

Intels upgrade path is always dam expensive, AMD on their 3rd gen yet can still use a 1st gen board its just swopping out of cpus thats basically it
Both your statements are true. Re Intel's upgrade path.. I'm still rocking a 4th gen i7. I'v never been one of those people to upgrade a GPU / CPU every 1-2 generations. I just can't justify the performance "gain" for the $ outlay. That said, historically Intel have always paid for themselves long term, much like nVidia. There just seems to me more "quality engineering" / oomph under the hood, atleast in my experience.

If upgraded every 1-3years like clockwork, then yes Intel & Intel / nVidia would be more expensive. If the latest from AMD isn't just sexy because its new, I'll prob be looking at a 3600x & a nice little mobo + RAM come black Fri, as for my current multitasking (little time for gaming unfort) workload , 6-8 cores could be rather nice, but I'll need to look into their equivalent of VT-d & a few other things.

Clearly, local sellers are matching the prices because they can, not because AMD is supposed to be cheaper.
Its possible but keep in mind that in SA, AMD have a tiny tiny marketshare VS Intel. Less sales volume = less discounts passed onto the consumer. Just wait til BF, I'm sure these new AMD , and quite possibly current Intel CPU's / combo's will be going for a good 20-30% cheaper than they are are, partly due to BF & part due to renewed competition.

This is how my upgrade always goes. Look for pricing on what I can afford for Intel, pull up something AMD in more or less the same budget. Open bench sites. Intel wins there, Amd wins there, Intel overall 1 or 2% faster. Look at Amd price.... Hell yeah R1000 cheaper, SOLD. :D

Does anyone here actually watch Linus. So annoying !

Yes. But in his defense, he did say, if he can be on YouTube and be a success, anyone can.

I’m really excited for the future of AMD products because instead of sticking to a few cores and small increases in performance, they are changing a lot.

This means that the product is not refined and games don’t properly use the cores yet.

If you look at the 2700X review from when it was launched to now, there is a huge gain as drivers, BIOS and games have all been refined to make better use of it.

I think that in 2 months time, the 3700X is going to be insane for gaming.

As for Intel, well, they may come out with another product soon but they will need to drop prices and increase value to make the average gamer want to buy them again.

Most people can’t afford a 9900K.

And what about the next gen of AMD products after AM4? Zen 2 is the last gen before a major refresh so I think AMD has a lot to give still and their next lineup is going to be even more refined and more powerful.

Was nice to see that I can drop in the 3600/3700/3800/x CPUs in my asus prime x370 pro mobo. Its got official support so no need to buy a new mobo. I just think its cool to be able to swap out the CPU and nothing else, meanwhile with Intel....
Shame about the price for the new stuff though, and I cant even sell my 2600 since they are almost R2000 cheaper brand new at the moment.

Benchmarks don't actually have much in them at stock clocks besides multi threaded workstation applications. I would still get the 3700x over the 9700k at these prices though.

This is why you should always buy a board with a decent VRM setup.

Just now you want to drop in a much higher end CPU for an upgrade but you cheaped out and went for trash. Now you need a new board as well as a new CPU.

Even if it’s team blue or team red, spend some money on a decent board.

Any decent B450 board will save you a ton of money and run most 3000 series CPUs without too much stress.

Can just check your boards website and see if it will support 3rd gen Ryzen, this list is for asrock only

We need a tier list of motherboards that show which have the best VRMs.

Saying that an A320 motherboard can run Ryzen 3000 series, is like saying a canoe can pull a water skier.

Ill also say to be safe the top section of that list, the others might support it but not to its full potential

So to be really safe any high end X370 or X470 board will work, any B or A series board will need to be triple checked

I'm really looking to upgrade end of the year so hopefully prices might slide a bit then. I've never had anything other than Intel + Nvidia for the last 15 years. Ryzen looks good on paper but really not sure if I must change. Still rocking an Intel i7 2600K so it going to be a full upgrade.

One thing u never do is buy anything end of the year you will pay up to double the price festive and all that. Wait for those January promotions.
2 there is nothing wrong with Ryzen man, some people just makes a big thing out of nothing. It def will be vetter than 1st and 2nd gen ryzen. But i guess your issue is will it be better than intel. Anything is onky better depending on what it is you want.
Bragging rights guess will be intel as its the more expensive parts
Functionality AMD vecause it does what its supposed to do and a cheaper price point. Might not feel it now but long run you will.
Ive had no issues gaming on a 32inch 1440p 144hz monitor with a Vega 56 it maxes out everything i play (BF V, Apex, tomb raider etc)
Also look at it this way who is best a low level API?
Whats the next gen consoles going to run?
Thing is onky gonna get better for AMD
Once those next gen consoles come out PC gaming is gonna be so much better as most all platform games will be running LL API and thats amds playing field

So there is alot of variables to look at before upgrading

And no im am not a AMD fanboy, im just looking at whats best for my pocket, and what will get me over 80FPS average on gaming and can still be a work horse for video and music editing etc

And idgaf about grammer or spelling lol you know what im trying to say

Lol, yeah no problem I understand, well a few years ago I wouldn't of even thought of AMD, but recently I have been considering it which is progress. I'm looking at the 3700X, and a fairly decent motherboard. Maybe there will be good prices Black Friday as well. I am definitely thinking of making the move considering all I do on my PC is basically game.

Take an Intel CPU that competes with an AMD CPU you have in mind on an equal level, do the full kit pricing wise. The fastest way to make up your mind. :D

Well it was kind of a rhetorical question as with 8,7 Million subscribers , I guess plenty of people are watching. Lots of people watch Taylor Swift too .
Will stick to GN or Hardware Unboxed or anyone else for that matter.

You said it. Plenty of YouTubers who have a hoard of followers who would blindly defend them to their deaths. To be fair, LTT are pretty good and Linus is respectable in the way he critiques and doesn't step on eggshells at risk of upsetting partnerships/sponsors. Production quality is pretty good, and he's getting his team to host more frequently now instead of just him. Anthony is pretty good.

There are a couple people who dislike Linus, *cough* oj0 *cough* but if you don’t like him, don’t watch him.

Yes, I could complain about some of the inane videos that they make, but they don’t make those videos for me, they make them for people who know less than I do.

I will complain about the segways that Linus uses to introduce sponsors, my fuck, cringeworthy.

I watch all of the popular vloggers and they all have their pros and cons:

Steve from GN can be boring yet very fair and informative, Hardware Unboxed can be really pointless or really useful, Linus still sounds like a squeaky toy or a boy who’s voice still needs to break through puberty, but has a hella good balance of lifestyle videos for the average consumer and that’s why he has a huge following.

My personal favorite is Jayztwocents, because he’s weird and I’m weird, so I understand him. I also like the content balance of videos he does - he’s slightly more geeky than Linus but with a good balance.

Yes, there are other channels out there that might be better but I haven’t found myself wanting to watch them.
