My overclocking endeavours. (4790k & 1080)

Having a lot of time in the evenings when out of the country, I tend to read up on PC stuffs, this time round it is the potential platform upgrade I am looking at... Then it hit me:

I am not getting as much from the 4790k as I should be. I am running at 55-60 degrees on a 43 multiplier. Which seems to run too hot, considering that I made the mistake of potentially UNDER volting it!?

According to Intel @ Intel[emoji2400] Core[emoji769] i7-4790K Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.40 GHz) Product Specifications , my 4790k should do 4.40 stock out of the box... Which means that I should be able to push 4.7+ with the h80i...

Something is up...
Delid, Delid, Delid! (imagine me jumping around outside your house with this written on a board shouting it [emoji23][emoji23]) and unfortunately there is only so much heat a 120mm rad can get rid of, I saw crazy good temp drops going from 120mm to 240mm

Delid is in the works for sure... Might get it done sooner than later.

60degrees at 4.3 seems excessive even for a thicc h80? I might be wrong. No idle temps really as it is always at 4.3 according to cpu-z. I am doing something wrong. :/

Hhmm, it really depends on a lot of factors though. I remember my 4790k at 4.5ghz being no higher than 65 degrees on a 212 (air) during games like PUBG. 60 degrees isnt bad, but what is your ambient temp there at the moment? (assuming you're in Bots) also, pictures of your case/setup?

intel 4.4 is single core clock speed, are you OCing all the cores to 4.3 or just one? if all core then you must ecpect it run much hotter than with the single core boost clock of 4.4. A delid will help a lot but your cooler will be holding you back.

PC is at home in Pretoria. I have NO idea on ambient temps dude, would be a fat guess. 22degrees? :p

2 intake at the front pull through the gpu radiator, cpu cooler push/pull as exhaust and no fans on the top. PSU is isolated, intake bottom and vents itself.

Planning on replacing all fans the weekend, along with an additional intake at the top. (just to the right of the cpu cooler)

No RGB's = No street cred

Also remember in your current config you are pumping the hot air from the gpu through your case.

I understand that... But GPU is on 28degrees, and CPU almost instantly at ~60. Would that add an additional ~10degrees on what I would expect on my cpu?

Instantly on 60 is a big no no, so it hits 60 when you just start up the pc?

Is there a need (specific game or application) to overclock that GPU with that CPU? I've been led to believe that a 1070/1070ti is a better pairing, but maybe you have some specific use case where the CPU isn't bottle necking?

I would maybe think about putting the 240mm rad on the CPU and the 120 on the GPU?

Yes good idea to swap them around.

Rather chuck the CPU and upgrade! Get that X99 with 6800k!

This is how mine is currently set-up and it's working amazing, on sartup yesterday afternoon one of my cores were like 12c highest one sat at 16c

Instantly is maybe a bit strong a word to describe the time frame, but definitely quick.

I am overclocking the CPU to keep up with the GPU. :D Gpu is running stock clocks.

I'm doing everything at 1440p, so no matter where a bottleneck is a bigger/better GPU will always be better.

The bottleneck is minimal though, almost negligible when running at high detail. A 8700k is ~20% faster than the 4790k with a 1080ti in the worst case scenarios.

Idling at around 55+, and gaming at around 60-65. 🤷‍♀️
Oh thats not bad at all. Just a little weird that the idle is so high

Maybe just check how hard your processor is working during "idle".

Go to Task Manager -> Performance and check what speed it is running at while on idle.

It should be like 30-40 on idle.

I know the 4790k generally runs hot but that is abit to much. Is your PUMP set to one speed or does it maybe change speed when the PC is on idle?
Maybe the pump and fan are slowing down

It is just very weird to jump only 10 degrees form idle to 100% usage. My moneys on that PUMP changing speeds
It is plugged into a CPU fan header, and the CPU Radiator fans are plugged into the cooler unit itself...

Will do some investigation when I get home. But we all agree something is not lekker?

Yeah that's not right

YES IT IS!

A sweet spot i5 8600k with an asus z370F strix. Easy

Unless you want to stick with more threads on an i7 for work purposes
This machine is for gaming exclusively. I do all my work is done on my mac, so this is just for play.

8600k worth above 4790k?

Well there are quite a few factors.

Left4790k Right8600k

Cores 4 - 6 More cores yay
Threads 8 - 6 less threads, who cares, only gaming
Base 4.0 - 3.6 Not sure which is better as you will be using the turbo freque' anyway
Turbo 4.4 - 4.3 A little less turbo on the 8600k but you will most likely overclock
TDP 88 - 95 8600k has a higher TDP, supposedly more heat generated
Faster BUS speed on the 8600k

So the list is very close.
The main point here is that you will join a higher GEN, newer technologies, nicer Mobo's, upgrade your RAM to DDR4. What speed do you even have on that 4790k, 1600mhz ddr3?
The RAM jump from 1600 to 3000 will be a noticeable 10+ FPS, depending on game played

Also unlocks the potential to upgrading that CPU eventually to the 8700k for MORE POWER! Not really necessary though, I feel the 8600k 9600k 8700 are all great to pair with a 1080ti. I dont see the point in 8700k and above for GAMING only. Some may disagree.

Maybe the 9700k is better, it turbos to 4.6

The jump to 32gb/s NVME and faster ram would definitely benefit me greatly at 1440p...

Looking into this upgrade now. :D

That mobo has been fixed? Wouldn't that void the warranty
