Having owned the mainstream VR tethered units - as well as a few obscure tethered ones, capable but obscure nonetheless ..... I can honestly say the BEST experience I've had has been on an Oculus Go. Ironic, considering the tethered units are usually connected to a beefed up gaming PC and the Go is a standalone device.
What made it the "Best"?

I ended up Sideloading retroArch on my Go, so that I could play Nes/Sega and PS1 games during loadshedding.
Ouclus TV supports bluetooth Xbox One controller

Mostly the lack of SDE and God-Rays. Excellent screens used on the Go. I believe the Rift S will be using the same screens as the GO.
Lightweight, comfortable. Sound quality is very decent considering the sound is pretty much coming out the straps on the side (in a fashion)

Put my rift up for potential sale:

I was considering selling mine as well...but I'll hold on to it until something is released that's really worth upgrading to.

Quest however is a day 1 purchase for me. A VR Console...no PC needed and no wires, yes please!

Well, I also have the Odyssey+ so decided to keep that. Hope I don't regret it, the touch controllers are much better and the rift is more comfortable, but I prefer the res of the O+. Quest has no appeal to me, I like the idea that it is wireless etc. but I don't know if it has the graphical power to please me, also I like using the hmd for Elite Dangerous etc. which I just wont get on the Quest. Now if it had a wired option that would be a different story.

I am also considering putting my Rift up for sale to get money towards the Quest.

After trying the Gear VR and having my first VR experience I went from being a devoted Mac user of 12 years to buying a custom built gaming PC just so I could buy a Rift... but wireless, oh how I love wireless! Always have... ever since my first wireless controller. Oh the money I spent on wireless adapters for my console controllers back in the day :p

Now I have two GearVRs to go with my two Galaxy models as well as a DayDream... love wireless. Wireless HDMI, please Santa, it's all I want for Christmas! 😜😍😂
I DO love my Rift (thanks to Home, Dash and Avatars etc)... but love my Odyssey more because it has so few wires to worry about...
Did someone say Rift with no wires? Yes please! Where do I sign? :D

Hope the Oculus Quest with TPCast Air will be living up to all the hype.

I'm afraid we'll need 60ghz and 5G to hit the right spot in terms of latency.
There's a however a program called Vridge/Riftcat that might enable you to play pc games on the Quest. Just waiting to see how well of a job it'll do. Did try it on my Oculus Go, but I only have a 2.4Ghz network, not a 5ghz so I could not test out the Image quality fully as I wanted to.

What makes this program interesting is, it already works on the Vive focus, 6dof controllers with 6 dof tracking

$1000 for the full Valve Index kit, what the vark man. I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, maybe $600 to say $700. But $1000, so much for that idea.

I agree, that puts it a bit out of my budget. But I think they'll get some sold...I see it the same as R22K 49" Superultrawide screens....if it's good, it'll sell....(a few at least.)
I did buy my Rift on day 1 for $700 and touch on day 1 for $200
With import and a third sensor it cost me well above R15k and I've never had any remorse.

Anyway...I'm just looking at my options for getting a Quest. R9000 shipped to my door for the 128GB version from Amazon....If I'm not going to the states anytime soon, I'll pull that trigger.

True... But I normally expect 5 years from a monitor, with these headsets it seams like there might be a bit of leap-frogging over the next couple of years. I think the headset on its own though isn't bad at $500, it is the additional $500 for the controller setup and base stations. If I didn't the current vive wands are so terrible I'd even justify getting the headset and second hand base stations and controllers. I was even hoping to see if I could get the knuckles controllers (now Index controllers) to work with my Odyssey+ but at $580 just for that I don't think that's worth it sadly.

Valve is targeting the higher end market. The index with it's knuckles seems like a really good headset from what I saw with Tested. Everything I currently want except for the wireless is in it. Full finger tracking, high res screen with RGB layout, up to 130 fov and 120hz backwards compatibility screen. 72hz is fine for not getting motion sick and having clear visuals but 120hz according to Tested is the equivalent of being on caffeine, that feeling of being super repsponsive and super fast tracking. But like 90hz needing 90fps or else ASW, same will apply.

Even has a opening in front that can hold a usb device that Valve has left there for modders to do whatever.
If you have the cash, then that's as good as it's going to get for now. At least there's mow a bar that's been set, even though it's out of the price range for most, but it's going to be an option if you want to save up.

For those interested, Oculus Quest costs R7300 to get here in South Africa with current exchange rate, although first 3 days of stock has been sold out, so it's only shipping now from the 24th and not 21st.

Through where, is Oculus selling into SA?

Oh, wait, I see Amazon will ship the Quest to SA but not the Rift S! Grumble...

Shit...
Was worried about that when I saw how much bigger the Rift S box was compared to the quest.

Sure, but it is less than 1 kilo. I mean I had my original Rift shipped here. I mean they could send the original rift and touch when it was two separate boxes as a combo. Maybe it's just a launch thing. And if not. There's always @ScottulusMaximus but then you'd need to pay for RMA return.

Okay. Don't know how I got that weight, something not right. But still :(

So, @hideinlight I chatted to Amazon support and they said it should be able to ship to SA no problem, they asked for my address details to adjust the system on their end. (I've used their support before when an item seemed to have the wrong shipping and tax pricing).

Harsh: I've forwarded all the details so if you want then you can order it now with the different address and will change the correct address once it get rectified
Or else you can wait for 24-48 hours and after then place the order with the desired address
Will that work ?

Me: I'd prefer to wait just in case, I wouldn't know what alternative address to put in :)
Thank you!

Harsh: Yes that's correct Montezuma
Once it will be done you will be receiving an email with the confirmation in next 48 hours

Me: Thanks!

Harsh: You're welcome. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Me: A few of us here in South Africa at carbonite forums will be very glad to hear that it will shipping to South Africa.
Nothing else, thank you!
