Bikers!?

Jeez, how do you guys manage so much mileage on your brake pads?
I've nearly done 10000km and the backs are nearly finished. Haven't checked the fronts yet.

R1200RS so they aren’t ridden that differently.

Actually was fully intent on buying an XR but couldn’t handle the cable clutch and revvy motor. Fell in love with the RS instead.

But I’ll make a plan to check my pads this weekend to be sure as I don’t want a big surprise at my 30k service.

Mine needs to be replaced, Bike has 32000k on them, however not 100% sure if it was the original pads since i dint have the Bike since brand new, but confident they are.

Yeah that sounds more reasonable.

And do they really NEED to be replaced or are they just on the questionable side?

It’s called engine braking and riding with The Pace.

But I also tend to wear down the rears quite heavily. But 10,000km sounds outrageous.

What bike?

Ktm 690 smc, it has plenty of engine braking, guess i like to use the back to brake more than the front

The RS is the only BMW I'll ever consider. I'm not really into their flat twin engine but damn that bike looks nice.
Please tell me you have it in that sexy white and blue colour?

Anyone know where I could find a tail tidy for a 1290 Superduke GT? My mate is on the hunt for one. I found a nice one from the States but $150 + import duties = R3600

KTM power parts? R1500 +- for the tail tidy?
For the 1290SDukeR but I can't imagine it being much different.
He's lucky, they didn't bring the DukeGT into this country for very long.

You believe me, I had that same mentality, I was a Yamaha Guy and was looking at the R1 back in 2010 and that you would not catch me dead riding a boxer engine BMW. They were Slow, noisy and agricultural.

Test rode a K1200S and I was sold on the the inline 4's not the boxers yet. The K1300S's are quick bikes but is easily overlooked as the do not have chains. K1300R's was spanking the BKing when Suzuki claimed it was the fastest naked and still think in a straight like it will beat a Superduke, they are quick. The S1000RR back in 2009 was the only 1000cc bike that could keep up with the Kawasaki 1440's and 1340cc Hayabusa's. Somehow BMW always underrates there bikes or maybe it is just me.

The 125hp on the Current GS just doesn't feel like just 125hp. It feels like more, not Superduke Level, just like a very health 125hp. Since getting a boxer your life really changes. Such punchy engines and powerful enough for the Road. The GS is my first boxer BMW, and it is a fantastic bike.

Trax KTM Quoted me R2300 for power parts a tail tidy.

Yeah it also has less pistons and does more work so if you are a heavy rear braker it would eat away more quickly.

I wanted a Lupine Blue but then got a crazy amazing deal on the grey/black/silver that I just couldn't say no to and happy I settled for it because a year or three on the Lupine Blue doesn't hold out quite as good.

Frankly I had no interest in the RS whatsoever even as a Twin fan, by and large because coming from a Street Triple I was chasing comfort and so the XR just looked like the perfect bike for me. Loads of power and upright riding position and ticked all the boxes.

Then I rode it and the clutch was terrible and bizarrely the riding position ate into my shoulders like you wouldn't believe and the seat forces you into one space. The revvy engine for me who rides every day in a lot of traffic combined with the clutch just put me off so much.

So I ended up riding the RS thinking it would be uncomfortable and too similar to my Street Triple but it ended up fitting me like a glove and two years on I still think it's the perfect bike for me.

Actually the RnineT was awesome fun as well and such a good ride, but doesn't offer the practicality of luggage and top box etc so wouldn't work as a primary bike.

Before committing to the RS I went and test rode a Ducati Multistrada expecting the Italian flair and much more potent engine to win me over but I was actually bitterly disappointed with it and it simply doesn't live up to the asking price. Had it been similar money to the RS it may have seen deeper consideration.

If you are really bored I wrote a little about it...

Ducati - Italian Twin Pasodoble

BMW - Rise of the Triad

Iv'e ridden Many BMWs from the old skadonk K75 and old R65,R85 up to the new S1000R,GS,S1000XR etc etc.
Lot's of family and friends parent's have BMs that I was allowed to ride.
I did ride a K1300R. It's not a bad bike at all, loads of power everywhere but I felt it had a very cheap plastic feel to the build quality and it's steering was slow and heavy. Maybe there was something wrong with it but that was the reason I didn't buy it. The B-king may not be faster, I really don't know but it definitely feels faster. I still want to get one. I have ridden loads of GSs from the R1100 engines to the newest R1200 engine and will probably take a spin on the possible R1250 if/when it comes out.
They are good feeling bikes. They all have feeling of pulling to the side when revving at a standstill, the newer ones feel it a lot less though.
I don't like the laziness of the engines. but I could deal with the RS as a tourer, That engine is perfect for plodding with cruise control at 120kph on a touring bike. and the RS looks good :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the "R" tail tidy fits the GT but their tails are definitely a bit different.

First bike:
Offroad: Suzuki ER 50
Onroad: Kawasaki Z1100ST

Current bike: BMW R1150GS
Dream bike: R1200GS Adv.

I enjoy riding any bike! Some are just more temperamental...

I have been driving the R1150GS for 17 years in dust, mud, gravel, potholes etc. Done many many kms. Still enjoy it

It's not just a feeling. The RnineT will literally torque steer to the side if you rev it out while pulling away the first time and after that one just automatically compensates for it.

The Liquid Cooled ones don't do it nearly as obviously.

Guessing there is a major flywheel difference or something between the two motors. It's also why the RnineT has so much more soul/character.

Still nothing like my Buell though. That one you would rev in a parking lot and it would walk itself backwards.

I got onto a R1150R, a funny yellow/green looking thing. And I almost fell over when I revved it.

But it drove well, still a lazy engine though.

I've been riding the R nineT again recently and yes, the engine seems lazy in terms of revving up when you blip the throttle. Compared to my 990 it revs like a steam engine.
That said, when you're in gear..any gear...and you twist that throttle, it feels like there's a giant rubber band connecting you to the horizon. It just pulls and pulls for ever. I love it.

My 1290 does that but it also has the "Pull the front wheel up a bit" thing while anti wheelie is going overdrive to stop it.
V-twins ftw, Torque for days and also some nice go go power.

Don't get me wrong; V-Twins all the way for me. Besides the power & torque, they just have a great sound and character.
All I'm saying is that boxer isn't as bad as I thought it would be and far better than everyone makes it out to be.

I agree 100% with you. It cant power wheel in 3rd gear with 135kg on it like my Superduke can, but it does pulls quite nicely, and makes nice commuting bikes.

Checked my front pads this morning with a flashlight and seems like there is a good 2-3mm groove left so I reckon I'll easily get to 35,000km.

Maybe even 40,000km.

One thing I have noticed with my KTM 1290 SdukeR.
The tractionControl/wheelie control is quite intrusive if I try to pin it from a stand still. It moves forward but you can feel it cutting power. Methinks I need to go for that track pack option so I can fiddle with the traction control levels.

But once I'm rolling in third or fourth and a bike or snarky wannabe super car is coming up from behind... shjo my Duke hauls ass. It just goes and very little seems to be able to catch up. even superbikes, the only bikes that came past me like I was standing still has been a H2 and a Busa.

SuperDukeR ftw. No regrats :p
