This series was launched in 2013. But why now all of the sudden did it become viral?

Because it got launched on Adult Swim, to a relatively limited audience, and only really gained popularity by word of mouth from a devoted fanbase.

It's the kind of show that initially grates your tits, with seemingly shoddy animation and voices like nails on a chalk board... I initially dismissed S01E01 as mindless garbage, pandering to the same American idiots that enjoy reality television...

But if you keep at it, and catch how clever it is in terms of seemingly unimportant details forming part of the story arc, pop culture references and the underlying social commentary, it really gets under your skin.

It's utterly brilliant.

Because people on the internet started with this i hate my life and want to die era of memes this year and one of the memes used was of mr Meeseeks which caused people to research where it came from and then more and more memes started coming from things done in the show and now its popular ... weird world we live in

And yes, this... the sensation it's now become has been mostly due to memes sparking curiosity about the show.

The epic cliff-hanger ending of season 2. That was a game changer for me. There were some deep and generally good moments, but that clinched it for me

Just started watching it on Netflix...or Showmax...can't remember.

After every episode I walk away saying "WTF did I just watch?", but somehow I'm always looking forward to watching the next one.

Yip, think thats pretty much the only feeling people get xD Its like, "wtf is this cocaine riddled story", while loading the next episode :p

There are a lot of adult-themed topics that they cover in the episodes.
Not full-on social commentary style like South Park but still enjoyable.

Admitting their daughter was an accident to her face has so many layers of messed-up rolled into it (just one example of many).

I lost my shit with the whole light switch memory in the latest episode.

Do the Porky Pig impressions ever stop? And the mid-sentence burps? Fragging annoying they are.

Dont give up now, keep going....

I won't. Just wanted to know whether it keeps up. Cuz it's seriously grinding on my nerves. If it doesn't get better I don't think I'm gonna make it to Season 3, probably somewhere near the start of 2 I'll draw the line.

No, it's definitely not that because South Park has heavy social commentary whereas Rick and Morty is just a pop culture reference bonanza.

First Season, I agree with you, Second season onwards, it is definitely South Park for smart people. As was the case when South Park started out as well. Give it a watch. It is extremely clever but it is also very very subtle. Which sounds odd to say considering how in your face it is but it is definitely hiding its nuanced, social approach behind a very interesting and ballsy story. A story, which definitely plays a part in getting you to think.

Push through it :) Would definitely love to have some interesting discussions on the topic once you are up to speed in season 3

Are we gonna mention the helmet that keep popping up through out the seasons.
Pretty obvious this episode, the helmet or semi sphere thing on rick's desk in the garage
