Hi guys,

A little background:
My Dota 2 gaming channel just got monetised recently, https://www.youtube.com/@dotain5minutes in just under 5 months, with 32k subs. It was such an uphill journey, I learned so much, but realise that I have so much more to learn!

This is where I want to pick some of the seasoned pro's brains 🧠. I enjoy the process and love making the gaming videos. But with that being said, I'd also like to maximize income with it. Are there any tips you guys can give me, initial goals, etc. Right now, my goal is to hit 100k views per month, and work my way up.

Any advice, in terms of advertising, external advising, Facebook, vs Google ads? Is there some template I can use on Google ads maybe? And what metrics do I use to find out if it is a success etc.

Thank you in advance. I'd really appreciate some guidance

What are your analytics saying? Congratz by the way.. Impressive. Strangely some of your vids show only double digit views which is really weird considering your subscriber count? any idea why?

Like I said, I'm still figuring this thing out myself 😂😂
What I thought about youtube before starting a channel, and what I know now, are worlds apart! For starters, there isn't a direct correlation between subs and views.
So subs are easier to obtain through shorter content. I ran with super short content for a long time, which gave me massive sub growth. Then longer content to gain the viewing hours needed to monetise.

Some of my earliest videos were literally recorded with my NUC, bought on Carbonite! 😁 Hoe was I supposed to know people play with better graphics than a NUC 😳 youtube viewers were harsh with their feedback, but it helped me get better hardware and improve the quality.

But I'm not sure what you're asking here, are you asking more input to help me? Or asking me to help you? 😂 In either case, I'd be more than happy to assist.

A few things I see as immediate areas to improve on, is engagement, more so, getting more people to comment, more views of course, and push the CPM up. On the last point I noticed vast differences in CPM between videos, as low as $2 and as high as $10. Many mysteries to discover for me.

There is definitely a strong correlation. I was more pointing to points of interest rather than asking for anything. Like I said before some of your videos have like 50 views which I just find really strange for someone with 32000 subscribers. I was thinking maybe these videos were getting age restricted or flagged as irrelevant which is why I pointed to your analytics. I know youtube tends to group creators into categories and if you deviate from your assigned category your videos will get a lot less viewership.

I would suggest possibly lengthening your content but it needs to appeal to the EXACT same crowd. If you were doing shorts it might be good idea to create compilations of these shorts to create longer videos.

I have zero subscribers. You are a far better judge than almost anyone else on the server. 32000 subscribers is an accomplishment, massive. We can give suggestions and maybe critique but I doubt you''l find better advice on how to run your channel than you are already doing. Your content is also pretty few and far between. This can work if you are producing long informative or entertaining content that clearly takes time to create but as more of a "short" creator you should probably be posting alot more if you are looking for more engagement. If you can create some points of discussion in your video, that can really help with the comment section. Maybe including controversial pro plays or unusual tactics or exploited bugs.

Your doing great so far. I would focus more growing your channel rather trying to maximize its financial potential. Theres always sponsored ads.

Thanks a mil. This is a very valid point you're making. My channel was gaming, however I see I made the streams entertainment. Do you think this will have an impact?

But the early videos were really crappy. I didnt have the required hardware to make anything better. But I just said stuff it! And went with it. I took a more, "learning by doing," approach.

Thank you for your input 😁

On the length of content, it's all about ads, so you're on point there too. The longer content allows for more ads, which is how youtube is run essentially.

But I need to figure out how to market the channel a little better electronically.

On your 0 subs, if you ever plan to grow, give me a shout. Especially if it's dota 😁 I'll happily share learnings.

Rattle, I forgot to ask, could you expand on the correlation between subscribers and views? Is there a ratio or anything you work with or how?

At this point it is a tax benefit 😂 the cost of equipment will keep me in a negative for a while still
It doesn't quite work like that (more so with a new tax year starting from 1 March (tomorrow)) - chat to @Jack Rabbit Group if you need advice on compliance

I may have been wrong:

"In years past, subscribers used to be a very valuable asset to YouTube creators. By gaining a subscriber, you were typically gaining a viewer that would come back and watch future videos, leading to increased channel growth. However, over the years, YouTube has made changes to its website that have devalued subscribers.

Before, your videos would be delivered to every single subscriber to your channel through the subscription box and the home page. Nowadays, YouTube is more inclined to show your videos to users who are the most likely to watch based on their viewing history. YouTube decides which users see your videos based on their data." >> What's More Important on YouTube: Subscribers or Views? | TubeRanker

Youtube seems to be changing how it advises viewers on what they should watch. My view was simply that which is mentioned in the first paragraph. More subscribers equals more viewers, a direct correlation. Maybe not so much anymore?

Aha. Your wording on the original post was strong, so I thought that you had information that I wasn't aware of 🤔 because in my experience running the channel, subscribers don't necessarily equal views. Videos with interaction seems to create more impressions, and in turn more views. And of course watch time too.

I've read some places that with higher subscriber count, the algorithm seems to favour the channel, and give it a slight edge on impressions.

So in short, higher subs *could* lead to more views, but not necessarily.

Thank you for the info above, it's very helpful.
